Welcome back to the People’s Guild.
We’re excited to introduce a brand new show under the TPG umbrella — Under the Hood, hosted by @keeegs. This series takes a closer look at the inner workings of the Splinterlands DAO: how proposals are made, how decisions get funded & how we can keep improving the systems that shape the future of the game.
It all started with Keeegs’ post, Finding the Flow for the Splinterlands DAO, which sparked deeper conversations about transparency, structure & community engagement. From there, the idea for a dedicated show was born — a space to dig into the details, challenge assumptions & bring DAO discussions to life in a way that’s open, accessible & community-driven.
Here’s what went down in the first episode of Under the Hood:
DAO Transparency and Community Engagement
Keeegs, Matt, and Bjangles discussed the evolution and future of the DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) for Splinterlands. Matt explained the DAO's origins, emphasizing its vision of player ownership and the benefits for both the community and the company. Keeegs highlighted the need for more transparent and earlier discussions on proposals to engage the community effectively. Bjangles identified a lack of transparency as a key issue, suggesting that increased communication and involvement of community members in the proposal process could enhance the DAO's effectiveness.
SPS DAO Proposal Process Improvements
The group discussed challenges and potential improvements to the proposal process in the SPS DAO. They agreed that more education and support are needed for community members who want to submit proposals. Keeegs proposed creating a new podcast to facilitate discussions about proposals and provide context for the community. The group also discussed the need for clearer guidelines and best practices for submitting proposals. Bjangles raised concerns about the personal nature of proposal rejections and suggested that earlier conversations about ideas could help mitigate this issue. Matt emphasized the importance of managing expectations and preparing proposals thoroughly before submission. The group agreed to work on improving the proposal process, including creating more comprehensive guidelines and supporting community members throughout the process.
DAO Pack Management Strategy
The group discussed the DAO's management of packs, with Matt explaining that while the DAO now owns packs previously kept by the company for incentives, they have accumulated an excessive amount, particularly for Rebellion packs where the DAO holds the same total amount as was sold. They agreed that the DAO should burn a significant portion of existing packs and maintain only a small percentage (around 5–10%) for promotional purposes, with Matt suggesting that Clay or another designated person should have authority to distribute these packs without requiring new proposals for each use. The discussion also covered the impact of DAO-held packs on Conclave Arcana card distribution, with Matt noting that current holdings are reducing the chances of players obtaining rare cards, making it important to address this issue before the set sells out.
DAO-Company Contract Planning Discussion
The group discussed the possibility of implementing an ongoing 18-month contract between the DAO and the company for set development, which would provide more certainty and streamline the proposal process. Matt expressed support for this idea, noting that it would help with long-term planning and financial stability, though he acknowledged the challenges of predicting future needs. Keeegs suggested potentially separating server costs and set development funding into two different contracts, while Bjangles emphasized the benefits of a long-term contract for both parties. The discussion highlighted the need to balance community expectations with sustainable business practices, as well as the importance of proper financial management and resource allocation.
DAO Revenue Communication Strategy
The team discussed the need for better education about how the ecosystem works, with Matt explaining that players often misunderstand that revenue goes to the DAO rather than to the team. They agreed to improve communication about where funds go when players make purchases, with suggestions to gamify the SPS burning process and create more engaging user experiences. Keeegs announced plans for regular calls to discuss the platform and encouraged community participation.
