This past Sunday, August 24th 2025, I finally decided to get off my butt and go for a photo safari to downtown Vienna. Actually, my aim was to have icecream on Schwedenplatz, the famous Italiana Eissalon that has the best icecream in Vienna. The trip to get from my place in Floridsdorf (across the Danube) to downtown Vienna was a adventure ride itself. Details about that further down. What I encountered after I finished my icecream is actually the gist of my story here - a thriving artists community creating work on a stretch along the Danube Canal between Schwedenplatz and the Urania.
Junk Metal Sculpture
I had photographed Graffiti in that area before: Urban Art along the Danube Canal on Easter Sunday 2019, but had at that time not noticed the development on the other side past Schwedenplatz. I don't think it was there at that time.
..... so, getting back to my current story: first of all, here is my icecream indulgence:
After I had my icecream I decided to take a few more pictures from the bridge:
Once on the other side, I descended the stairs:
here I am looking across to where I came from
And now to the Artwork and Graffiti

this is a very involved mosaic work, still being worked on
a Dutch/Canadian artist I talked to, working on his large canvas attached to the wall
While I was still on the bridge, I could not help taking these shots
But enough of these side remarks, back to the art:
Unfortunately, there are a few images missing from my phone - it was being a bit unpredictable, in fact at the end of the evening, it crashed - battery drained!
on the left side, this is a part of the public toilet - well decorated
not really wheel-chair accessible, but then, neiter is the entire area, since you have to descend the stairs from the bridge
Inbetween shooting the art and graffiti, I took more pictures of the area
Sightseeing crafts going up and down, turning around beyond the bridge at the Urania
but now a bit more art
At the beginning, I said the whole trip from Floridsdorf to Schwedenplatz was a adventure ride. The reason for this is that the S-Bahn from Floridsdorf was closed due to rail work. So they would have busses ferrying passengers from Floridsdorf to Praterstern (where you then would get into U1 to Schwedenplatz). I didn't want to take that, so I took the U6 to Spittelau in order to go from there with the U4 to Schwedenplatz. Once I got there I found out the U4 would only go to Friedensbrücke (also because of rail work), which is several stations away from Schwedenplatz, so no good for me. Suggestions were to take streetcar D, which I did. But this is a adventure sightseeing tour taking you through a convoluted route that took forever to get to Schwedenplatz.
So here are a couple of images from Spittelau

I certainly did not take that route back home. I went with the bus from Praterstern,
which is quite a ride as well, but really not as long.
But prior to all that, I got hungry, so I decided to eat downtown. I wanted to go to Rheintaler's Beisl, but they were full with a line-up outside, so I decided to check out Sparky's, which was not busy at all.

So here I am at the Graben, to the left is Rheintaler's at Dorotheergasse, and going to the right along the side streets is Sparky's in the Goldschmiedgasse, near Stephansdom
There would have been places to eat at the Donau Canal

but at that time I was not hungry yet, and never bothered to check a menu.

There would be more photos I took, but it seems I am straining the program already.
Hope you stayed with me that long.

Final Words of wisdom and a pet concern of mine, especially about art diplomas:
I had in years past come across quite a few 'fake diplomas' that pretend to be academic credentials. Next to 'Pay to Play Galleries' they are the scourge to be avoided. The summary of a paper about this spells it out
