Amalthea was discovered on September 9, 1892 by Edward Emerson Barnard. She bears the name of the nymph (or goat) Amalthea from ancient Greek mythology; Amaltheia. The nurse of the infant Zeus after his birth in Crete. The common derivation is from amelgein, to milk or suck. According to some traditions Amaltheia is the goat who suckled the infant Jove
