I knew Barcelona would be full of things to see, but wow... I really didn’t think it through. Why? Well, maybe because I forgot one small detail… walking all day...you need good shoes! And me? Nope. I brought my “look cute” shoes, not my “let’s hike the city” shoes. 😂 But hey, no worries...I survived. I mean, how can I think about blisters when I’m having such a great time?!
So, next day: mission “Sagrada Família.” I mean, come on, everyone knows this church. Even if you’re not into architecture, you’ve seen it somewhere...on a postcard, a magnet, maybe even tattooed on someone’s leg, who knows? 😄
Even though I saw a million photos of it, nothing prepared me for seeing it in real life. That church is HUUUUGE. And woooow... beautiful. They’ve been building it for like 125 years, and people say it might finally be finished next year? Gaudí worked on it for 40 years and basically said, “I’m not in a rush.” And honestly? Nobody cares. “Take your sweet time, Gaudí.”
The place was packed with people...everyone taking pictures, admiring the view, saying “woooow” every five seconds. And yes, here comes my little history moment (you know I can’t help myself 😄). The church actually started in 1882 by another guy, Francisco de Paula del Villar, but Gaudí took over in 1883 and totally transformed the project into the magical, fairy-tale masterpiece it is now.
What’s even more amazing? Gaudí didn’t ask the government for money. He built the church only with donations from the people. He said, “The Sagrada Família is a church for the people, it is their mirror.”Goosebumps, right?
Okay, now let’s talk about Gaudí himself. Born in 1852, lived in Barcelona, and basically turned the city into an open-air museum of his wild imagination. His stuff doesn’t look built....it looks dreamed. Wavy lines, crazy colors, tile art everywhere...nature was his biggest inspiration. Trees, animals, waves...you see all of that in his work.
Sadly, he died in 1926 after getting hit by a tram (seriously, what a weird and sad way to go). But his legacy? Still standing. Still mind-blowing. Gaudí wasn’t just an architect...he was a dreamer with a toolbox. 🛠️✨
We saw a lot of his buildings that day, including Casa Vicens. Oh boy. This house is like a candy box exploded, and I LOVED it. The colors, the patterns… Gaudí, you mad genius, I’d move in tomorrow if I could.
After all that, we wandered into the Gothic Quarter, which I think is the oldest part of the city? (Correct me if I’m wrong, history friends 😅). It’s full of tiny twisty streets, Roman walls, and medieval magic. We got lost probably 12 times but didn’t care. Every corner was amazing, even if we saw the same street 5 times, it still felt new!
We sat by the cathedral, stretched our legs, and listened to live music. And then... a surprise! A lady came up yelling “Selfie! Selfie!” and didn’t leave until we took a photo with her. Then she hit me with: “Five euros for my baby.” And pointed at her stomach. Ummm... lady, you looked more grandma than mama, but hey, I’ve got a funny photo and a weird story now...worth the 5 euros 😂📸
After that? BED. Because wow, we were DONE. But one day left, and I was ready to make the most of it.
Woke up the next morning thinking: “I’m swimming today and I don’t care if I freeze!!” 💦 It was cold, but once I was in, it actually felt amazing.
I did it! My last Barcelona morning started with a sea splash, a beach coffee (best combo ever), and a quick visit to La Boqueria market. If you’re hungry here...that’s a you problem, because there’s food everywhere. I grabbed some snacks and sweets for my husband so he wouldn’t be jealous (or grumpy 😅).
Then... airport time. And yeah, I’ll admit it...I didn’t want to leave. One more day, please?! There’s still so much I didn’t see! But okay, my photo album is bursting, my heart is full, and my legs… well, they need a break 😅
Barcelona, you were amazing. I’ll be back. Maybe when Sagrada Família is finally done (no rush though, Gaudí’s style 😉).
Thank you, Barcelona, for the laughs, the beauty, and the crazy memories. New day, new adventures… but this one will be hard to beat. 💃🏽🌞🌆
