Okay, so here’s the tea ( or coffee)...some hacker gang calling themselves Warlock (yes, like a fantasy movie villain) decided to attack the company that handles our salaries. Which means… yeah, my money, your money, our money is now part of their little cyber party. I don’t know if I should laugh, cry, or just buy a piggy bank and go full cash-only grandma.
What happened? My programmer friend explained this to me, so I’ll say it in normal people language. Hackers found a hole in some Microsoft system (SharePoint, if you wanna sound smart), slipped in, and basically copied a big pile of data...like 150+ GB. That’s not just cat pictures. That’s company files, HR stuff, maybe even our details. The way these guys work is simple: They break the system so it stops working. They grab data and then shout “pay us or we’ll dump it online!” It’s like digital mafia, but nerdier. How could they even do this? It wasn’t someone forgetting to install antivirus or clicking on “win a free iPhone.” No. This was a real hole in Microsoft software nobody even knew about. Hackers love these “zero-day” things because it’s like finding an open back door. So yeah, they just walked in. Should we be worried? Well, here’s the part where my boss said: “everything’s fine, don’t worry.”
Honestly, I don't really know... I've never been hacked, and I don't have any experience with it. They say only about 1% of customers were hit, which sounds tiny...unless, of course, we are in that 1%. It doesn’t mean your bank account is about to explode, but it does mean we should keep an eye on our statements. If a random charge pops up from “click on it, we have a cookie”, yeah, that might be the fallout.
My feelings on this mess? I’m pissed. Every month it’s another story...hackers break in, companies panic, and we just sit here hoping our data isn’t being sold on some shady forum. They get their moment of fame, Microsoft gets side-eye for having bugs in their system, and we get anxiety every time we log into online banking. Yay. So thanks, hackers. Payday now feels like a horror movie cliffhanger. And thanks, payroll company, for outsourcing our peace of mind to the magical world of “SharePoint vulnerabilities.” If my paycheck doesn’t land next month, I might just send them a ransom note.
With love, @tinabrezpike ❤️
