It’s true that there’s beauty in diversity, especially when it comes to opinions. What excites one person may look completely ordinary to another, and that is what makes life interesting. This prompt actually reminded me of a particular time when something trended so much online that I had to pause and ask myself, “What exactly is the big deal here?” It was the season when Labubu was trending.

I remember scrolling through my social media and almost every other post had something to do with Labubu. People were unboxing it, showing it off, or creating special content around it. Honestly, I couldn’t hide my facial expressions whenever I saw those posts. It was always funny to me because I kept wondering, What is so special about this toy that so many people want to own it? I didn’t understand the hype at all.
At some point, I was wondering what could it be, and I decided to research it. I wanted to know why everyone was making so much noise about it. After checking, I realized it was just a small toy, yet it was not only attracting huge attention but was also very expensive. That was when I shook my head and laughed even more. I thought to myself, So this is what people are stressing over?
Well, I know that what I love may not be what others love, and what excites people may not make sense to me. That’s the beauty of our different preferences. But I also believe that sometimes, social media exaggerates things to the point where people feel pressured to join the trend even when it doesn’t really mean much. In my opinion, Labubu is one of those things that was given far more attention than it deserved.

Maybe part of the reason I didn’t connect with the hype is because I don’t follow social media trends that closely. I’m not a content creator, so I don’t feel the need to buy into every new wave just to create content. I believe many creators jumped on the Labubu trend not necessarily because they loved the toy, but because it was popular, and they wanted to use it to gain more attention online. Since I don’t live my life based on social media validation, it was easy for me to just look at it and move on.
Thinking back now, that whole season taught me something important. Social media has a way of making small things look bigger than they really are. A simple toy can become a global sensation just because people talk about it enough. But at the end of the day, once the trend dies, it becomes clear that it wasn’t that deep to begin with. That’s why I don’t waste too much of my energy on online hypes.
In life, I believe attention should be given to things that add real value personal growth, meaningful relationships, or goals that push you forward. Passing trends will always come and go, but the things that truly matter remain. So while many people were busy chasing Labubu or other trends like it, I just sat back, laughed at the noise, and reminded myself that not everything that looks popular deserves my attention.
