The Only Certainty in Life

In life, there are many things that divide us, our race, religion, wealth, background, or social status. But there is one thing that unites us all, no matter who we are or where we come from death. It is the only thing that every human being will surely experience. Whether rich or poor, powerful or powerless, everyone will one day face death. This truth may sound harsh, but it reminds us of how fragile life is and how meaningless some of our struggles for worldly things can be.

The reason I am talking about death today is because of what I witnessed this morning. As I was on my way to work, still feeling unwell and weak, I saw something that broke my heart. Right beside a bridge, there was a human body lying by the roadside. The most shocking part was that the body had no head, and some parts were already disfigured. From the looks of it, it seemed to be the body of a woman.

I stood there for a moment, lost in thought. Who could have done such a terrible thing? What did that person do to deserve such a painful and humiliating end? As I continued my journey, questions filled my mind. What have we turned this world into? What happened to our sense of humanity and compassion?

The most painful part was that when I returned from work later in the day, the body was still lying there. No one seemed to care. No police officers, no government agents, nobody came to take any action. People walked past as if nothing had happened. It made me wonder if we have lost our conscience as human beings. In this country, unless you are connected to those in power or have a godfather among the politicians, your pain or death may not matter to anyone.

It is sad that we live in a world where human life has become so cheap. People kill for rituals, money, jealousy, or selfish reasons, forgetting that none of us will live forever. We chase wealth as if we can take it with us when we die. But the truth remains that no matter how rich or powerful we are, death will humble us all.

Sometimes, I ask myself if animals are better than human beings. At least animals kill to survive, not for pleasure or ritual. But humans destroy one another for reasons that make no sense. Our hearts have become so hardened that we no longer feel pity or remorse. Even the Bible says, “The heart of man is desperately wicked; who can know it?” That verse captures the reality of our world today.

We must learn to remember that this life is temporary. Whatever position, power, or possession we have today will be left behind one day. So why not live with love, kindness, and peace? Death is the great equalizer. It makes no difference between the king and the servant, the rich, and the poor.

If only we could all remember that one truth, maybe we would think twice before doing evil. Maybe we would treat others better, knowing that someday, we, too, will return to dust.
