When I saw this prompt, the first thing that came to my mind was “hmm, do I really know First Aid like that?” And honestly, the answer is no, I won’t lie and say I am a pro at it, because if someone suddenly collapses beside me right now and I have to jump in, I might just panic before I even remember the few things I’ve heard about First Aid.
But at least I know some basic things sha. Like if someone is bleeding, the first thing is to apply pressure on the wound and try to stop the blood, okay.. I also know that you should not just leave someone unconscious without checking if they are breathing, And, I have seen plenty of videos of people doing CPR, but if I have to do it in real life? I don’t know if I will get it right o, those videos always make it look simple, pressing down on the chest and breathing into the mouth, but in the real deal when someone is gasping, that is a whole different thing.

The funny part is, I have been in small situations where First Aid was needed, One time my younger sister fell down while playing and scraped her knee badly, Me, I just rushed for water and Dettol, cleaned the wound, and started shouting for my mom to come, at that moment, I thought I was doing First Aid, but looking back, it was just the basic “clean and call for help.” Another time, a neighbour’s child fainted after running around in the hot sun, I was so confused that I almost ran out of the compound before someone poured water on him and he woke up, that day taught me that First Aid is not just about having sense, it is about having knowledge.
In fact, I think one of the big issues with us here is that we don’t really get taught about First Aid like that, In school, they may talk about it small in Health Science, but no proper training, Meanwhile, these things can literally save lives. Imagine if somebody is choking beside you and you don’t know what to do? Or someone gets burnt and instead of cooling it with water, you are rubbing toothpaste because that is what you have heard people say. Things like this are why First Aid knowledge is very important.
For me personally, I won’t mind going for proper training on it, especially CPR. I always picture myself in a scene where somebody collapses in the market or in church, and everyone is shouting but nobody knows what to do until they carry the person to a hospital far away. If at least one person knew First Aid, maybe the story could end differently.
So if you ask me how much I know about First Aid right now, I will say just small, just the basics, I can help someone who is bleeding, I can put ice on a swelling, and I can at least not panic too much while waiting for proper help to arrive, but am I satisfied with that? Not really sha , because emergencies don’t tell you before they come.
If I ever get the chance, I would definitely want to learn it properly, because this life is full of uncertainties, you know? Knowing First Aid won’t remove problems from happening, but at least it can help reduce damage when it matters most, And honestly, everyone should know at least the basics, because we never know whose life might depend on it even our own.
