Cold Case for Sega Saturn Gets Update

Earlier this year, in April 2025, I covered an in-development title for the Sega Saturn, Cold Case. The draw here is this being a full on 3D game in the style of Resident Evil. On the Sega Saturn, a console not known for its 3D prowess, yet here is an independent developer making it happen. If you know anything about the Sega Saturn, you know why this is super impressive. There was an update posted to YouTube in the last couple days proving the Sega Saturn has untapped potential.

Challenges of 3D on Sega Saturn

The Sega Saturn is not a powerhouse in the 3D department. Sure, in the hands of Sega themselves, there were some great 3D games created. Unfortunately, Sega was not known for sharing the details with third party developers as much as they probably should have.

Further complicating the job for third party developers is the fact that 3D was tacked on late in the development of the Sega Saturn hardware once the final specifications for the Sony PlayStation were available. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okw5EQhtcQA

Adding Collision and Showing Terrain

Where we left off Cold Case was mostly an announcement trailer of sorts. There wasn’t a lot available at that time.

While this update does not add all that much more, what it shows is impressive.

Most importantly we see collision with elements in the environment. Also, we get a bit of the outside and how the levels will load as you walk around.

Keep in mind, this is a developer using aftermarket development tools and not trained on Sega Saturn development creating this. What they have created is amazing. Sure, it may not look like much if comparing to Fortnite but what from the 32-Bit era could stand toe-to-toe with something running on Unreal 5?

Check out the embedded video above and swing over and drop some support for the developer. We never know when a like, a share, a comment can brighten someone’s day.
