Modretro and Chromatic are working together to re-release Rayman on the Game Boy Color. This is great news for fans that missed the first run, are huge Rayman fans, or completists. 2D sidescrolling action platform fans would do well to investigate this one as well. There is even an extra goodie included.
What Was Old Is New Again
Originally released in 2000, Rayman for the Game Boy Color was probably missed by more than a few fans. No worries, in 2026, you can pick it up again, this time in a colorful aftermarket box, and on a purple cartridge.
The extra goodie included is a feelie, remember when PC games were full of these? While this is not a trinket tied to the game, a map or anything, it is still cool.
Fans will get a pixelated charm featuring Rayman himself.
Put it on your keychain, charm bracelet (might be too big but who knows), or just put it on display as a cute little conversation starter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REM9s3Z1gd8
What About the Game
According to Retrododo.com, fans can expect the original 30 levels as they were originally presented.
It seems the only changes are the cartridge, new artwork for the sticker, new box and manual. The actual game is apparently not receiving any changes.
This could be good or bad depending on your stance on re-releases. I mean, for me, Nintendo ruined me with re-releases with Super Mario All-Stars, a high watermark that even they failed to meet with each re-release. I know All-Stars was more a remake than it was just a straight re-release but it set a high expectation with gamers.
I am not complaining about a straight re-release though. For many this may be the version they wanted. The people that have torn this game up back in the day might pass knowing the only updates are superficial to the actual game, and a charm is not worth the asking price on Modretro’s website.
Let me know in the comments below, are you a Rayman fan? What 2D action platformers did you rock back in the day? I was mostly the major players in this area – Nintendo, Capcom, etc. myself.
