What's up friends?!
Yesterday I came across one of the most exciting critters I have ever seen out in the "wild".
A male European rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes nasicornis)!
This is by far the biggest beetle I have ever seen, excluding the ones in zoos and stuff, and was also my first time encountering the species.
This is one of the largest beetle species occurring in Europe, reaching lengths of almost 5 cm.
Other than their bulky appearance, males are also really cool due to the long curved horn on their head.
Check it out:
Pretty bad ass right?
Unfortunately, this little fella was dead when I encountered him ๐
Maybe it was his time to go, maybe he died from disease or whatever. Probably the latter since these guys are supposed to live till the end of summer
Anyways, a really cool find!
Normally I would let the fella go but since he was already dead I decided to keep him in a glass jar ๐ซ
If you know of any tips on how to preserve him please let me know ๐ ๐
Ok, I guess this is it for today.
See you soon with more creepy critters ๐
