This is my post on #freewriters2887 #dailyprompt do not despise hosted by @marinnewest's. In the bustling village of Umuahia, Nigeria, lived Nkamaka, a gentle girl with a heart as vast as the Niger River. Orphaned young, she was taken in by her father's new wife, who brought her own daughter, Adaeze. Adaeze was beautiful, with skin like polished ebony and eyes that sparkled like stars, but her spirit was sharp as a thorn. She despised Nkamaka's plain clothes and quiet ways, mocking her endlessly. "You're nothing but a servant," Adaeze would sneer, while Nkamaka scrubbed floors and fetched water without complaint. The village elder often warned, "Do not despise the humble, for fate weaves unexpected threads." But Adaeze paid no heed. One fateful market day, a storm brewed as the girls headed home with baskets of yams. Lightning cracked the sky, and a flash flood swept through the path. Adaeze, in her fine wrapper, slipped into the raging waters, crying out in terror. Without hesitation, Nkamaka dove in. Her strong arms, honed by years of labor, pulled Adaeze to safety. Soaked and trembling, Adaeze clung to her step-sister. "Why save me? I've been cruel," she whispered. Nkamaka smiled softly. "We are family, bound by more than blood. Despising you would poison my own soul." From that day, Adaeze changed. She helped with chores, shared her finery, and the two became inseparable. The village whispered of their bond, a living testament: Do not despise, for kindness redeems even the hardest hearts. In time, they married brothers from a neighboring clan, building homes filled with laughter. And so, harmony bloomed where thorns once grew.
