This is my post on #freewriters2863 #dailyprompt lawyer of last resort hosted by @marinnewest's. The Lawyer of Last Resort In the bustling city of Ariston, where power and wealth often dictated the outcome of justice, one man stood apart—Barrister Nathaniel Cole. He was not the most famous lawyer in the city, nor the richest, but people called him the lawyer of last resort. Clients never came to him first. They only sought him when every other lawyer had turned them away, when hope seemed like smoke drifting into the wind. Nathaniel’s office was small, tucked between a bookshop and a tailor’s store, its shelves lined with worn-out law books and old case files. Yet within that cramped space lived a man with a fierce commitment to justice.

One rainy afternoon, a young woman named Ada rushed into his office. Her brother had been accused of a crime he didn’t commit—arson that destroyed a wealthy merchant’s property. Every lawyer had refused her, fearing the merchant’s influence. But Nathaniel listened patiently, his eyes sharp with conviction. “Miss Ada,” he said softly, “I do not promise easy victories. But I promise to fight.” The trial was fierce, the prosecution relentless. Evidence had been twisted, witnesses threatened. Still, Nathaniel worked tirelessly, unearthing truths others had ignored. In the end, his persistence exposed the real culprit—the merchant himself, who had staged the fire for insurance. The court erupted in shock. Justice prevailed, and Ada’s brother walked free. Word spread again through Ariston: when all doors close, when hope flickers faintly, Nathaniel Cole—the lawyer of last resort—remains the last guardian of justice.
