This is my post on #freewriters2833 #dailyprompt slot machine hosted by @marinnewest's. In the dim glow of neon lights, Henry sat in front of an antique slot machine late at night. He was only paying attention to the spinning reels in front of him, despite the clinking glasses and cheers that filled the casino. He had always been fascinated by chance; the way a single tug could change everything. Careless gambling was not Henry's style. He only had a few bills set aside, and he told himself it was just for fun. Every pull caused the machine to flash sevens, bars, and cherries, but they never quite lined up. However, there remained hope, the chance that "maybe this time." His grandfather used to say, "A slot machine is like life—you keep trying, not knowing when fortune will smile." He recalled this statement. He fed in his last coin as the words reverberated. With a slow, almost ceremonial motion, he pulled the lever. After the lights blinked and the reels spun, there was silence. There were three golden sevens in a perfect line. Coins poured into the tray like a waterfall as the machine burst into song. Henry chuckled at the irony rather than the money. His last opportunity had become success. For him, the thrill of hope reborn was more important than winning or losing when playing the slot machine.
