This is my post on #freewriters2865 #dailyprompt write something hosted by @marinnewest's. On the edge of a quiet village stood an abandoned house, known by everyone as the lantern house. Each evening, without fail, a dim yellow light would glow from its dusty window, though no one had lived there for decades. Children dared each other to peek through the cracks, but none ever stayed long. Rumors spread—some said it was a ghost, others believed it was a forgotten soul searching for peace. One rainy night, Ada, a curious young girl, decided to discover the truth. With her small umbrella, she crept to the house, her heart racing. Inside, she found not a ghost, but an old lantern hanging from a beam, swaying gently as though someone had just touched it. Beside it lay a journal. Ada opened it and discovered the words of a traveler who had once stayed there. He wrote of kindness, warmth, and his wish that the lantern always remain lit to guide lost wanderers home. Ada smiled. The mystery wasn’t about fear—it was about love and hope. From that night on, she visited often, keeping the lantern polished and glowing, so that no one in the village would ever feel lost again.
