This is my post on #freewriters2840 #dailyprompt never retire hosted by @marinnewest's. Grandma Affiong, at 78, was the heart of Ukanafun, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Her small provision shop, a community hub, buzzed with laughter and chatter. Despite her age, Affiong never considered retirement. “Work keeps my soul young,” she’d say, her eyes twinkling as she handed out sweets to children. Each morning, she swept the shop’s veranda, her wrapper tied tightly, humming old church hymns. Neighbors, young and old, stopped by—not just for rice or soap, but for her stories and wisdom. Affiong had seen Nigeria’s independence, raised six children, and buried a husband, yet her spirit remained unbroken. “Retire? And leave my people?” she’d laugh, dismissing the idea. One day, Emem, her granddaughter, suggested she rest. Affiong shook her head. “Life is work, my dear. Sitting idle is for those who’ve forgotten how to live.” She continued measuring yam flour, her hands steady, her smile warm. Even when arthritis slowed her, she trained Emem to take over, but never stepped away entirely. Affiong’s shop wasn’t just a business; it was her legacy, a testament to resilience. She’d work until her last breath, and Ukanafun loved her for it.
