This is my post on #freewriters2874 #dailyprompt does not correspond hosted by @marinnewest's. The letter arrived on a rainy morning, its paper soft from the damp. Clara turned it over in her hands, noticing the return address was smudged beyond recognition. Inside, the words were neat, careful, but entirely unfamiliar. “Dearest, I have waited so long to hear from you. Every silence is a weight. Please, write back.” Clara frowned. The letter was signed only Yours, Samuel. She didn’t know any Samuel. She checked the envelope again—her name and address were written clearly. This was no mistake in delivery. And yet, the message did not correspond to her life, her history, or anyone she knew. Curiosity tugged at her. She searched for Samuel in town records, in libraries, even in the quiet corners of the internet. No trace. But every week, another letter came. Each one spoke of longing, of memories Clara never had, of moments that could not belong to her. One night, unable to resist, Clara replied: “I am not who you believe me to be. Still, I read your words.” The next morning, there was no letter. For the first time, the silence felt heavier than the rain.
