This is my post on #freewriters2882 #dailyprompt rest no more hosted by @marinnewest's. In the misty hills of Akwa Ibom, Nigeria, Ubong lived with his wife Ekaette and their two children, Ini and little Ada, in a modest bungalow surrounded by lush palm groves. Ubong, a hardworking fisherman, returned each evening with tales of the sea, while Ekaette tended the farm, her laughter echoing like birdsong. Their life was a rhythm of simple joys—family meals under the stars, stories by the fire, and peaceful slumbers unbroken by worries. But one stormy night, everything changed. As thunder roared, Ubong awoke to a chilling whisper: "Rest no more." He dismissed it as wind, but the voice returned, night after night, growing louder. Shadows danced unnaturally in the corners of their home, and Ada began screaming about "the old woman in the walls." Ekaette, ever the skeptic, blamed fatigue, but soon she too felt icy fingers brushing her skin in the dark. Desperate, Ubong sought the village elder, who revealed a dark secret: Their home stood on the grave of a forgotten ancestor, a restless spirit cursed by betrayal. "She seeks peace through your unrest," the elder warned. "Offer her what was denied—justice." That fateful evening, the family gathered, reciting ancient prayers and burning offerings of kola nuts and palm wine. The spirit materialized, a spectral figure with eyes like embers, recounting her tale of stolen land and broken promises. Moved, Ubong vowed to reclaim her honor, petitioning the community to honor the old gravesite. As dawn broke, the whispers faded. The family, though scarred, found strength in unity. Rest returned, but vigilance remained—their bond unbreakable against the unseen.
