Flipping Costco Gold for $62,500 Cash Bask

Listening to podcasts or audiobooks is one of my favorite things to do as a secondary task while doing other things, such as driving, flying, yard work, etc. In fact, listening to the Tim Ferriss Episode 542 with Chris Dixon and Naval Ravikant is how I ended up on the Hive Blockchain and playing Splinterlands.

You Can Buy Gold at Costco?!

I was listening to this podcast episode with Tim Ferriss and Chris Hutchins and learned that you can buy gold in 1-ounce bars at Costco. Here is the item from the Costco website: 1 oz Gold Bar. Frankly, I was completely surprised by this and had no idea you could buy gold by the ounce at Costco of all places. The image below is from the Costco listing.

Flipping Gold for Cash Back

The guest, Chris Hutchins, buys a Costco Executive membership for $130, which gives 2% cash-back on purchases, up to $62,500 per year. Throughout the course of the year, he buys gold when shopping at Costco and then resells it on the gold marketplace for a small loss to get the cash back.

If you want to learn more about the specifics of what and how Chris does this, the transcript is available here. Search "Costco" and the full conversation is there. Or the audio on the podcast starts around the 17:17 mark.

Would you do it?

There is no way I would have the patience to do this. But I found the concept incredibly fascinating and thought it would be interesting to share here.

  • Do you have any thoughts on this?
  • Would you try it?
  • Did you already know that you could purchase gold from Costco?

I'm wondering if anyone else would actually consider trying this. Personally, I'll stick to working my regular job and blogging on Hive. If anyone gives this a try, I'd love to hear about it.
