Hello everyone!
Welcome to week 33 of vibes competition. This week I chose the powerful and deeply moving song "Stand Up" by Cynthia Erivo. I was able to see Harriet Tubman (The movie) for the second time this week. This song showcases incredible musical talent but also carries a strong and important message — one that ties into the ongoing journey and history of Black women.

"Stand Up" was originally written and performed for the 2019 film Harriet, where Cynthia Erivo also played the role of Harriet Tubman. The song is both a tribute and a rallying cry, honoring the strength, courage, and resilience of Black women throughout history. It speaks to the unbreakable spirit that has endured generations of struggle, sacrifice, and ultimately, triumph.
I chose this song because Black women's history is rich, complex, and often underrepresented. From Harriet Tubman leading enslaved people to freedom, to modern-day leaders and innovators who continue to break barriers, Black women have always stood at the forefront of change. Their stories of perseverance deserve to be celebrated, remembered, and amplified. "Stand Up" captures this spirit perfectly — it’s a song about rising, fighting for freedom, and never giving up, even when the odds are overwhelming.
Cynthia’s voice in this track is breathtaking. It carries a raw emotion that makes you feel every word she sings. The lyrics, "I'm gonna stand up, take my people with me," remind us that the fight for equality and justice is not just personal but communal. It's about lifting others as we climb, creating a legacy of empowerment and hope for future generations.
Choosing "Stand Up" also felt important because music has always been a vital tool in movements for social justice. Songs like this inspire, heal, and bring people together. They remind us that while the road may be long and hard, we are never walking it alone. "Stand Up" is an anthem for anyone who has ever faced adversity and chose to keep moving forward despite it.
In honoring Black women's history, it's crucial to recognize both the pain and the beauty, the struggles and the victories. Songs like "Stand Up" give us a chance to reflect, to honor the past, and to recommit ourselves to the work that still lies ahead.
I been walkin' With my face turned to the sun Weight on my shoulders A bullet in my gun Oh, I got eyes in the back of my head Just in case I have to run I do what I can when I can while I can for my people While the clouds roll back and the stars fill the night
That's when I'm gonna stand up Take my people with me Together we are going To a brand new home Far across the river Can you hear freedom calling? Calling me to answer Gonna keep on keepin' on I can feel it in my bones
Early in the mornin' Before the sun begins to shine We're gonna start movin' Towards that separating line I'm wadin' through muddy waters You know I got a made-up mind And I don't mind if I lose any blood on the way to salvation And I'll fight with the strength that I got until I die
So I'm gonna stand up Take my people with me Together we are going To a brand new home Far across the river Can you hear freedom calling? Calling me to answer Gonna keep on keepin' on
And I know what's around the bend Might be hard to face 'cause I'm alone And I just might fail But Lord knows I tried Sure as stars fill up the sky
Stand up Take my people with me Together we are going To a brand new home Far across the river Can you hear freedom calling? Calling me to answer Gonna keep on keepin' on
I'm gonna stand up Take my people with me Together we are going To a brand new home Far across the river Do you hear freedom calling? Calling me to answer Gonna keep on keepin' on
I'm gonna stand up Take my people with me Together we are going To a brand new home Far across the river I hear freedom calling Calling me to answer Gonna keep on keepin' on I can feel it in my bones
I go to prepare a place for you I go to prepare a place for you I go to prepare a place for you I go to prepare a place for you
