Dear friends, today I would like to talk about one of the most inspiring people I've had the privilege to meet. This is James. I met James for the first time in June of 2023 when I stayed at the Chai Lai Orchid elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai. You can read all about the sanctuary here!

He was working as a photographer. The Chai Lai Orchid is full of the most inspirational people that have overcome enormous adversity. It is so much more than an elephant sanctuary; it also donates all proceeds towards supporting Daughters Rising, an organisation dedicated to helping at-risk women and girls. They are dedicated to empowering these women to combat human trafficking and exploitation within their communities, aiming to break the cycle of poverty. Their approach centres on the belief that combining employment opportunities with education leads to empowerment. As I tell James's story, I will be sharing some amazing photos and videos that he has taken for me.
James began his professional journey as an interior decorator before transitioning into the real estate sector. In 2001, during a trip to Thailand, he came to recognise his limited knowledge as he picked up the book The Handbook for Mankind, a transformative read that inspired him to adopt mindfulness meditation practices. Approximately 2 years later, in 2003, while staying in a hotel room without actively meditating, he experienced a profound moment that fundamentally altered his perception of life. This revelation led him to reassess his thriving real estate career, ultimately choosing to leave it behind and move to Thailand.
James was determined to embark on a new chapter before turning 50; this was because his father unfortunately passed away at only 54 years old. James transitioned into a career as an artist photographer. Initially, he faced challenges due to the scarcity of tourists and the unfulfilled prospects in property photography. Despite these setbacks, he remained focused on his craft. Approximately 4 years into this journey, he was contacted by the Chai Lai Orchid to shoot a wedding. This collaboration ultimately led to his involvement with not only their elephant sanctuary but also their foundation, Daughters Rising. This partnership has since become integral to his work and life mission. Now at 60, reflecting on the decade since his transformative career change, James encourages others that they, too, can reinvent their lives; it is never too late.

This is an incredible elephant sanctuary that has rescued these gentle giants from heartbreaking situations, providing them with genuine care and freedom. As an animal rights activist who has investigated many operations, I can confidently say there is absolutely nothing unethical about this place. The elephants are treated with the utmost respect and kindness—you truly have to experience it for yourself to understand. The elephants are not forced to do anything they do not want to; they are happy and healthy.
Beyond photographing elephants, James also captures special events such as weddings and temple blessings, bringing his signature artistry to every moment. What sets James apart is his ability to make you feel completely at ease in front of the camera. He knows the elephants so well that he can expertly guide you, ensuring you look and feel your absolute best. His talent lies in capturing not just stunning images but fleeting, intimate moments—turning mere seconds into memories that last a lifetime.
The experience was so incredible that I couldn’t stay away—I returned the very next year. Chai Lai left such a lasting impression on me that I tell everyone I know about it, and I’ll be singing its praises for a lifetime. You can bet I want to return every year.
During my stays at Chai Lai Orchid, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know the incredible people who make this place so special. From the kind-hearted Mae and her husband Charlie, the dedicated head mahout, to Aida, whose passion for dance inspires the children at the Kids’ House. Each of them plays a vital role in creating the magic of this sanctuary. They are more than just a team; they are the heart and soul of Chai Lai Orchid.
And of course, there’s the woman who started it all—Alexa. She is truly inspiring, not only to me but to her entire community. Also featured below is Sandar, one of the incredible women who received a scholarship from Daughter’s Rising. She has travelled to multiple countries, using her voice to raise awareness and advocate for change. The impact of Chai Lai Orchid is immeasurable, and the good it does knows no bounds. James donates a portion of his earnings every month to the Chai Lai Orchid and Daughter's rising.
