Prompt : Holidays Across Cultures

Compare a Korean holiday (such as Seollal or Chuseok) with a traditional holiday in your own culture. What similarities or differences do you see in the way people celebrate, and what do these reveal about cultural values?

In other words, tell me about your Traditional holidays.

Chuseok is one of Korea's biggest traditional holidays. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyR7fAYTwIY Chuseok is one of the biggest traditional holidays in South Korea, celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. It's a time to give thanks for the year's harvest, which is why there's a saying, "May things be no more and no less than they are on Chuseok." It symbolizes abundance and joy. The name "Hangawi" is a combination of "han," meaning "big," and "gawi," meaning "middle," referring to the day with the brightest full moon of autumn.

Chuseok Customs and Rituals

  • Charye (Ancestor Memorial Service): On the morning of Chuseok, families prepare a table with freshly harvested grains and fruits to honor their ancestors.
  • Seongmyo and Beolcho: After the Charye, families visit their ancestors' graves to perform "beolcho," which is clearing away weeds and tidying the gravesite. They then perform "seongmyo," a ritual to pay respect to their ancestors.
  • Great Migration: During the Chuseok holiday period, many people travel to their hometowns, causing significant traffic congestion on highways and at train stations in what's known as the "Great Migration."

Chuseok Foods

Chuseok is a time for families to share a variety of foods that celebrate the abundant harvest. * Songpyeon: These are crescent-shaped rice cakes made from new rice, filled with ingredients like sesame seeds, beans, or chestnuts. There's a saying that if you make beautiful songpyeon, you'll have a beautiful daughter. * Jeon: A dish made by coating various ingredients like meat, fish, and vegetables in flour and egg batter and then pan-frying them. Popular types include donggeurang-ttaeng (meatballs), hobak-jeon (zucchini pancakes), and beoseot-jeon (mushroom pancakes). * Galbi-jjim: A dish of braised beef or pork ribs cooked in a savory soy sauce marinade, a favorite for the whole family. * Japchae: A stir-fried dish made with glass noodles and various vegetables and meat, known for its vibrant colors. * Samsek Namul: Refers to three kinds of seasoned vegetables—doraji (bellflower root), spinach, and gosari (fernbrake)—which are essential for the Charye table.
