Culture is what makes a people special. It is the way we speak, dress, eat, greet, celebrate, and live our everyday life. We have many tribes here in my country and each tribe has it own language, food, clothes and customs. Even though each tribe is different in some ways there are things that binds us together and that is respect, family and traditions.
One of the beautiful things in our culture is the way we greet and show respect. In some tribes young people kneel down or bow to greet and this shows that we value age, wisdom, and respect. Our clothing is also a big part of our culture. We wear bright, colorful traditional clothes during special events.
Few months ago we had the world cultural day. Each pupil or student was meant to dress in their traditional dresses and come with their native food. Everyone dressed in their best attire and the aroma of amala, ewedu, gbegiri, nsala, akpu(also known as fufu) and others, filled the air. It was a very special day and filled with fun and laughter.
I was so happy watching my pupils bring our their food with their full chest 😁eating happily without being shy of what they brought.
We had the some cultural displays on that day, we had igbo cultural dance, yoruba cultural dance and ibadan cultural dance and songs💃. We were placed into different culture, I'm an igbo lady but I was very excited to be part of the yoruba culture.
We need to show our culture with pride and joy because it's very beautiful and unique.
Yes, the modern world is changing our lives, but many of us still try to keep our culture alive. We celebrate traditional festivals, teach our children our local language, and pass down family values. No matter where we go, if we carry our culture with pride, we carry home with us.
