On this occasion, I'm reviewing and analyzing one of Louisa May Alcott's most famous books, which has also become a classic of American literature over the years. It has been adapted for film countless times, but it will undoubtedly never be the same as experiencing the characters' dialogue firsthand. I'm referring to Little Women, a novel that, although written in 1868, has many avant-garde ideas that suggest the author was ahead of her time. >En esta ocasión me dispongo a reseñar y analizar uno de los libros más célebres de Louisa May Alcott, y que al mismo tiempo también se ha convertido a lo largo de los años en un clásico de la literatura estadounidense, adaptado al cine en innumerables ocasiones, pero sin lugar a dudas nunca será igual que vivir la experiencia de leer de primera mano los diálogos de los personajes. Me refiero a Mujercitas, una novela que aunque fue escrita en 1868 tiene muchas ideas vanguardistas que da a entender que la autora estaba adelantada a su época.
During the American Civil War, four working-class sisters (Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy) will have to face various challenges that test their abilities. Their father, being away at war, is unable to support and help the family. Each of these four main characters has a defined personality; they are very different from each other and pursue different aspirations, but they remain united in this difficult process they have to go through, which in turn will help them evolve in every way, thereby revealing their own inner strength.
Durante la guerra civil de Estados Unidos, cuatro hermanas de clase trabajadora (Meg, Jo, Beth y Amy) tendrán que enfrentar diversos desafíos que ponen a prueba sus capacidades, su padre, al estar en la guerra está imposibilitado para sustentar y ayudar a la familia. Cada uno de estos cuatro personajes principales tiene una personalidad definida, son muy diferentes entre sí, persiguen aspiraciones diferentes, pero permanecen unidas en este proceso difícil por el que tienen que pasar, y que a su vez las ayudará a evolucionar en todos los sentidos, con lo cuál queda en evidencia su propia fuerza interior
Throughout the novel we see how the sisters try to pursue their own dreams despite the difficulties, Amy, for example, is a happy girl who loves art, but is also attracted to glamour and high society, so she tries to fit into that world, Beth is more homey but loves music, Meg is more conventional because she dreams of getting married and starting a family, exactly what was expected of a woman at that time, so in that sense she had it relatively easy, however the concept of marriage then was very different from how we perceive it now, before love was one of the least important elements because there were issues such as dowries and surnames, something determining when choosing suitors. And finally we have Josephine, whom everyone affectionately calls Jo. This is my favorite character because I feel that in some way she reflects the author's avant-garde ideals. She doesn't dream of getting married, starting a family, or looking pretty. She thinks about writing and making her feelings and thoughts known to the world through her novels. However, at the same time, she has a protective instinct that often leads her to sacrifice herself for her family, acting as a mother would.
A lo largo de toda la novela vemos como las hermanas intentan perseguir sus propios sueños a pesar de las dificultades, Amy, por ejemplo, es una chica alegre que ama el arte, pero también se siente atraída por el glamur y la alta sociedad, así que pretende encajar en ese mundo, Beth es más hogareña pero adora la música, Meg es más convencional pues sueña con casarse y formar una familia, exactamente lo que se esperaba de una mujer en esa época, así que en ese sentido lo tenía relativamente fácil, sin embargo el concepto de matrimonio entonces era muy diferente a como lo percibimos ahora, antes el amor era uno de los elementos menos importantes porque estaban temas como las dotes y los apellidos, algo determinante a la hora de elegir pretendientes. Y finalmente tenemos a Josephine a quienes todos llaman cariñosamente Jo, este es mi personaje favorito porque siento que de alguna manera refleja los ideales vanguardista de la autora, pues ella no sueña con casarse, con formar una familia o lucir bonita, piensa en escribir y dar a conocer al mundo sus sentimientos y pensamientos a través de sus novelas, pero al mismo tiempo ella tiene un instinto protector que la conduce muchas veces a sacrificarse por su familia, actuando como lo haría una madre.
This book shows us a great evolution of the characters through their path to adulthood since throughout the chapters the sisters learn to recognize and overcome their personality defects, seeking happiness through virtue and effort, at the same time I consider her very ahead of her time given the feminist ideas she promoted, making it clear that the role of women did not have to be limited to the role of mother or wife, something that is not bad, of course, but the author showed through Jo that girls can look at, pursue and achieve professional and personal goals that go beyond what society is supposed to expect of them.
Este libro nos muestra una gran evolución de los personajes a través de su camino a la adultez ya que a lo largo de los capítulos las hermanas van aprendiendo a reconocer y superar sus defectos de personalidad, buscando la felicidad a través de la virtud y el esfuerzo, al mismo tiempo la considero muy adelantada a su época dada a las ideas feministas que promovía, dejando en evidencia que el papel de la mujer no tenía porqué limitarse al rol de madre o esposa, algo que no está mal, desde luego, pero la autora demostró a través de Jo que las chicas pueden mirar, perseguir y alcanzar objetivos profesionales y personales que vayan más allá de lo que se supone la sociedad espera de ellas.
