Today I finally finished reading a book I never imagined I would read, since I'm not exactly a fan of horror novels, but my youngest daughter insisted so much that I read it that I really became curious, so today I bring you my opinion about The Guest, a novel by Jennifer Macmahon. >Hoy finalmente terminé de leer una obra que jamás imaginé que llegaría a leer, ya que no soy precisamente un amante de las novelas de horror, pero mi hija menor me insistió tanto en que lo leyera que realmente sentí curiosidad, así que hoy les traigo mi opinión acerca de La Invitada, una novela de Jennifer Macmahon.
Helen and Nate are a couple who have just arrived in the countryside intending to have an idyllic and quieter life, far from the stress and hustle and bustle of the city. But what neither of them could have imagined was that, despite their house being new—they built it themselves—the land had a dark history. So Helen, a history teacher, begins to investigate and discovers the legend of Hattie Breckenridge, a woman who was accused of witchcraft many years ago, but whose sinister deeds are felt in the present.
Helen y Nate son una pareja que acaba de llegar al campo con la intención de tener una vida idílica y más tranquila, lejos del estrés y el bullicio de la ciudad, pero lo que ninguno de los podía imaginar, era que a pesar de que su casa era nueva, pues la construyeron ellos mismos, el terreno tenía una historia obscura, de modo que Helen, que es profesora de historia comienza a investigar acerca de ello y descubre la leyenda de Hattie Breckenridge, una mujer que fue acusada de brujería hacía muchísimos años, pero sus actos siniestros se recienten en el presente.
The book is very dynamic because it combines many interesting elements such as investigation, horror, and thriller. The story is so appealing because we as readers, like Helen, become obsessed with the idea of knowing what happens. Therefore, every time a clue or hint appears, it is very exciting, but at the same time, it is chilling because the more details we have, the more gruesome the story becomes. But it hooks us precisely because of that dark and mysterious aura.
El libro es muy dinámico porque combina muchos elementos interesantes como la investigación, el horror y el thriller, la historia es tan atractiva porque nosotros como lectores, al igual que Helen, nos obsesionamos con la idea de saber qué ocurre, por lo tanto cada vez que aparece una pista o un indicio es muy emocionante, pero al mismo tiempo es escalofriante porque mientras más detalles tenemos, más escabrosa se vuelve la historia, pero engancha precisamente por esa aura oscura y misteriosa.
The contrast in personalities between the couple (main characters) might seem a bit cliché, but it's no less interesting for it. She, for example, is idealistic and a firm believer in the paranormal, while Nate is the complete opposite—extremely skeptical, someone who can't believe in what he can't prove. However, this contrast is enriching because it maintains a perfect balance, and in the end, it makes the characters' evolution more evident. The story explores themes such as the fear of the unknown, superstition, and especially the fact that the past of the place we inhabit can influence the present, particularly when there's controversy or something particularly scandalous involved. The narrative structure uses time jumps to connect the past and present, but these aren't confusing. On the contrary, these "returns to the past" allow us to piece together the puzzle and reach a conclusion.
El contraste de personalidades entre la pareja (personajes principales) puede resultar un poco cliché pero no por ello menos interesante, ella por ejemplo es idealista y muy creyente de los asuntos paranormales, mientras que Nate es todo lo contrario, extremadamente exceptivo, alguien que no puede creer en lo que no puede probar, sin embargo ese contraste es enriquecedor porque mantiene un balance perfecto y al final esto hace que se evidencie más la evolución de los personajes. La historia explora temas como el miedo a lo desconocido, la superstición, y en especial el hecho de que el pasado del lugar que habitamos puede influir de alguna manera en el presente, sobre todo cuando hay polémica o algo muy escabroso detrás. La estructura narrativa se maneja entre saltos temporales para poder conectar el pasado y el presente, pero no lo hacen de manera confusa, al contrario, esos "retornos al pasado" son los que nos permite ir atando cabos para llegar a una conclusión.
Although the narration is simple and there is no use of rhetoric to "embellish" the novel in any way, it has some plot twists that pleasantly surprised me, so for all these reasons I would like to recommend this book, as I said, it is an easy read, in fact I finished reading it in a week, especially because the story is very engaging, so you are always left wanting to read more.
Aunque la narración es sencilla y no hay uso de retorica que "adorne" de cierta manera la novela, tiene algunos giros de guion que me sorprendieron gratamente, de modo que por todas estas razones me gustaría recomendar este libro, como les dije, es una lectura sencilla, de hecho terminé de leerlo en una semana, en especial porque la historia es muy atrayente, así que siempre te quedas con ganas de leer más.
