As the seasons change. The Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna is a historical garden complex that is located in the 3rd district of Vienna directly adjacent to the Belvedere Garden. The garden was created in 1754 and originally served as a "Hortus Medicus" to provide students of the medical faculty with a practically oriented education in botany. The majority of the approximately eight hectare large area is open to the public.
Im Wandel der Jahreszeiten. Der Botanische Garten der Universität Wien ist eine historische Gartenanlage, die im 3. Wiener Gemeindebezirk direkt an den Belvedere-Garten grenzt. Der Garten wurde 1754 angelegt und diente ursprünglich als "Hortus Medicus" dazu, den Studenten der medizinischen Fakultät eine praktisch orientierte Ausbildung in Pflanzenkunde zu ermöglichen. Der Großteil des rund acht Hektar großen Areals ist öffentlich zugänglich.

As I live near the Botanical Garden, I often visit the park, which is a popular recreational area in the inner city. After a one-month closure due to measures to contain the coronavirus, the Botanical Garden has reopened since 14 April 2020.
Da ich in der Nähe des Botanischen Gartens wohne, besuche ich öfters den Park, der ein beliebtes Naherholungsgebiet im innerstädtischen Bereich darstellt. Nach einer einmonatigen Sperre aufgrund der Maßnahmen zur Eindämmung des Coronavirus hat der Botanische Garten seit 14. April 2020 seine Tore wieder geöffnet.

According to the website of the University of Vienna, the collection includes about 11,500 plant species. Trees and shrubs line the sidewalks on the entire grounds, among them there are also many very old trees.
Laut Webseite der Universität Wien umfasst der Bestand rund 11.500 Pflanzenarten. Auf dem gesamten Areal säumen Bäume und Sträucher die Gehwege, darunter befinden sich auch viele sehr alte Bäume.
The plants are displayed in groups on the open-air grounds. In the Alpinum, mainly alpine plants, but also plants from other mountains in Europe and Asia, can be seen. The plants of the medicinal, useful and poisonous plant group are mainly used for the education of students, but also offer information for interested visitors. The largest part of the Botanical Garden is occupied by the Systematic Group, in which plants are classified according to their relationship.
Auf dem Freigelände werden die Pflanzen in Gruppen unterteilt zur Schau gestellt. Im Alpinum sind vor allem alpine Pflanzen, aber auch Gewächse aus anderen Gebirgen Europas und Asiens, zu sehen. Die Pflanzen der Heil-, Nutz- und Giftpflanzengruppe dienen vor allem der Ausbildung der Studenten, bieten aber auch Informationen für interessierte Besucher. Den größten Teil des Botanischen Gartens nimmt die Systematische Gruppe ein, in der Pflanzen nach ihrer Verwandtschaft eingeteilt werden.

One of the attractions of the Botanical Garden in Vienna is the over 120-year-old, walk-in bamboo grove. A metal walkway leads into the interior of the several meter high, evergreen grove.
Eine Attraktion des Botanischen Gartens in Wien ist der über 120 Jahre alte, begehbare Bambushain. Ein Metallsteg führt in das Innere des mehrere Meter hohen, immergrünen Bambuswäldchens.

On the spacious grounds you will find meadows, an insect house and several small ponds next to plant beds.
Auf dem weitläufigen Gelände findet man neben Pflanzenbeeten Wiesen, ein Insektenhaus und mehrere kleine Teiche.
Glazed fronts provide a view into two greenhouses. While Mediterranean plant species hibernate in the so-called cold house at temperatures just above freezing point, succulents spend their physiological resting phase during the cold months in rooms with a temperature of up to 15°C.
Verglaste Fronten bieten einen Einblick in zwei Gewächshäuser. Während im sogenannten Kalthaus Gehölzarten aus mediterranen Gebieten gerade frostfrei überwintert werden, verbringen Sukkulenten ihre physiologische Ruhephase während der kalten Monate in Räumlichkeiten, die bis zu 15°C temperiert werden.

This is what it looked like on the grounds of the succulents and cacti group during my last visit at the beginning of May. Soon, however, the tropical plants will be taken out of their wintering grounds and visitors will once again be able to enjoy the exotic splendor.
So sah es auf dem Gelände der Sukkulenten- und Kakteengruppe bei meinem letzten Besuch Anfang Mai aus. Bald jedoch werden die tropischen Pflanzen aus ihrem Überwinterungsquartier geholt werden und die Besucher können sich dann wieder an der exotischen Pracht erfreuen.
