I'm taking you along with me as I create a new card deck for myself. I will create it with an American Indian theme as I did once before. What is Lenormand? - check out my previous article.

Card 35 Cedar

This is another card that had to change significantly. The original card is the Anchor.

The anchor is about reaching goals (the safe harbor), stability, persistence, long lasting, fidelity and settling down.

But although anchors might have formed part of Native American Indian culture, it didn't make the level of symbol that it did in other parts of the world.

I thought about using the Chieftain, but I've already used Elder, and this felt too close.

Then, I thought about the tree - and how its roots become an anchor in the soil. A tree is stable, persistent, long lasting and definitely has settled down. One of the most important trees in the part of the US I'm from (coastal Oregon) is the Cedar.

As I researched, I discovered that the Cedar is important in other parts of the US as well, as a symbol of lost ancestors and again, the things that bind you to a location and make you settle down. So, this became very appropriate.

So, the keywords for the card are: * reaching goals * stability, fidelity, perseverance * long-lasting, persistence * settling down, putting your roots down, claiming a home * finding the partner who will be the person you need in your life

For more information on what this card means, check out Lenormand1's interpretation (the site was down today) - for combining the Cedar with any other card, check out the site: Learn Lenormand. Another site to check if Lenormand1 remains down is Cafe Lenormand.

  • For my new card, For my new card, I hit Google Images search, looking for something with CC0 (Creative Commons 0) licensing meaning that I don't always have to remember to credit someone - essential if I were to start doing paid readings with these cards.

I also had to find out which traditional playing card is associated with this card. So, here is my result:

35_cedar.jpg (Cedar image comes from Pixabay and the cedar mask comes from Jeff Kubina at Flickr.)

I wanted a picture that showed the size and scale of the Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata). Thinking still of the chieftain, who would give the sense of a permanent tribe, I decided to use a picture of a mask that was made of cedar bark - which was commonly used for clothing in the Pacific Northwest tribes such as the Chinook and the Salish communities.

The mask picture isn't perfect, but it was one I could find with useful Creative Commons licensing - 2.0 this time. But it adds a lot of character to the card and an unmistakable native twist.

I really like the result.
