Siendo profesor de informática pensé que lo sabría todo, excepto que en la universidad no te enseñan a cómo desempeñarte en materia blockchain. Así que fue parte de una experiencia que fue creciendo a lo largo de los años; siempre manteniendo una postura precavida sobre mi persona, cuenta y por supuesto, los fondos que había obtenido con tanto esfuerzo. Ser precavido en blockchain no te asegura que no puedas dar un mal paso, pero se reduce la posibilidad de perder tu dinero de forma considerable. Aunque uno no está exento de lidiar con usuarios que intentan sabotearlo a uno, ni mucho menos. Llevo tiempo intentando ver si logro recuperarme de esta situación; esa desagradable sensación de sentir que ese extraño está dotado de malas intenciones y que comienzas a desconfiar hasta de tu propia sombra.

As a computer science professor, I thought I knew everything, except that college doesn't teach you how to deal with blockchain. So it was part of an experience that grew over the years, always maintaining a cautious stance about myself, my account, and of course, the funds I had worked so hard to obtain. Being cautious in blockchain does not guarantee that you will not make a mistake, but it does significantly reduce the possibility of losing your money. However, you are not exempt from dealing with users who try to sabotage you, far from it. I've been trying for some time to see if I can recover from this situation; that unpleasant feeling that this stranger has bad intentions and that you start to distrust even your own shadow.
Una tarde recibí una notificación de un usuario que decidió seguirme. Tal como lo venía haciendo en todos los casos, decidí ir a su perfil para ver si había hecho su publicación de introducción y obviamente darle la bienvenida. Me encontré con un perfil muy extraño, que tenía un avatar en blanco y negro con efecto glitch que juro haber visto en alguna de esas películas perturbadoras que encuentras en cintas perdidas de una época remota. El poco tiempo que permanecí en su perfil, noté también una dirección IP, que coincidía de forma exacta con la mía, que supuestamente es una dirección privada. De pronto mi pulso se aceleró cuando la luz de la webcam comenzó a parpadear súbitamente, como diciendo "te estoy vigilando y estás a mi merced". Cerré la laptop de un manotazo y fui a buscar una cinta para tapar la webcam, mientras se me cruzó por la mente los ahorros que tanto me había costado acumular a lo largo de estos 10 años. Al día siguiente, luego de no poder dormir en toda la noche por estar tan preocupado, noté que había una transacción que yo no había hecho. Pero eso no era lo peor, todas las claves de la cuenta habían cambiado su forma, lo que me hacía pensar en que el power-down que se había iniciado ya no podría pararse, porque el poder ya no estaba en mis manos. Por lo intenso del problema aún debía seguir con mi vida y obligaciones, así que dejé a un lado lo que estaba ocurriendo y me dirigí al trabajo.

One afternoon, I received a notification from a user who had decided to follow me. As I always did in such cases, I decided to go to their profile to see if they had posted an introduction and, of course, to welcome them. I found a very strange profile, which had a black and white avatar with a glitch effect that I swear I had seen in one of those disturbing movies you find on lost tapes from a distant era. In the short time I spent on their profile, I also noticed an IP address that matched mine exactly, which is supposed to be a private address. Suddenly, my pulse quickened when the webcam light began to flash suddenly, as if to say, “I'm watching you, and you're at my mercy.” I slammed the laptop shut and went to find some tape to cover the webcam, while thoughts of the savings I had worked so hard to accumulate over the past 10 years crossed my mind. The next day, after not being able to sleep all night because I was so worried, I noticed that there was a transaction that I hadn't made. But that wasn't the worst of it. All the account passwords had changed, which made me think that the power-down that had started could no longer be stopped, because the power was no longer in my hands. Due to the intensity of the problem, I still had to get on with my life and obligations, so I put aside what was happening and went to work.
En medio de la clase que estaba dando comencé a recibir mensajes de forma insistente. A estas alturas mi rendimiento académico había bajado a su peor nivel. Lo noté porque mis alumnos comenzaron a cuestionar lo que explicaba, al punto de abrumarme por completo. Esos mensajes que me llegaban parecían jugar conmigo. Me aparecían mensajes ocultos, que al descubrirlos, veía no solo las claves de mis cuentas de Hive, sino también partes de las frases semilla de mis otras wallets, que también tenía fondos considerablemente altos. Cuando decidí ponerle fin a todo esto, pensé en encontrarle una solución. No solo quería que esa persona que me acosaba parara de hacerlo, sino que terminase para siempre, ya que me imaginaba que tendría muchas más víctimas que pasaban horrores aparte de mí. Entre ellas mi esposa, que había comenzado a hostigarla y que toda esa culpa sería mía. Me junté con un colega contándole la situación que estaba atravesando. Me reuní con él sin ningún dispositivo electrónico que pudiera ese extraño acceder. Incluso viajé en el auto de mi esposa que es mucho más antiguo que el mío y no tiene computadora a bordo; como ven, estaba comenzando a sentirme bastante paranoico; estaba perdiendo de forma gradual la cordura.

In the middle of the class I was teaching, I began to receive persistent messages. By this point, my academic performance had dropped to its lowest level. I noticed this because my students began to question what I was explaining, to the point of completely overwhelming me. Those messages seemed to be playing with me. Hidden messages appeared, and when I discovered them, I saw not only the passwords to my Hive accounts, but also parts of the seed phrases for my other wallets, which also had considerably high balances. When I decided to put an end to all this, I thought about finding a solution. I not only wanted the person who was harassing me to stop, but I wanted it to end forever, as I imagined that there would be many more victims going through hell besides me. Among them was my wife, whom he had begun to harass, and all that guilt would be mine. I got together with a colleague and told him about the situation I was going through. I met with him without any electronic devices that the stranger could access. I even traveled in my wife's car, which is much older than mine and doesn't have a computer on board. As you can see, I was starting to feel quite paranoid; I was gradually losing my sanity.
Él me dijo que podía hacerle caer en la trampa si aprovechaba que tenía mi dirección IP. Así que decidimos crear una wallet nueva con algunos fondos, con un acceso muy vulnerable, de manera que pudiese acceder fácilmente, pero que a su vez, dejara algunos rastros que lo comprometieran, con motivo de juntar suficientes pruebas para su detención. Conté lo sucedido junto a un abogado y el cuerpo informático forense decidió allanar al extraño. El abogado me contó que habían dado con el acosador, que había robado fondos a varios integrantes de una comunidad, vaciándoles las cuentas en absoluto. Pero también los forenses lograron encontrar un servidor encriptado que reveló malware de complejidad muy alta, que podría haber sido usado tanto en la comunidad en la que publicaba, como en la propia universidad donde dictaba clases. Mi colega más tarde, cuando todo se normalizó, esbozó una sonrisa y me dijo: "has logrado salvar tus ahorros y tu jubilación, pero también a la universidad de un desastre absoluto."

So we decided to create a new wallet with some funds, with very vulnerable access, so that he could easily access it, but at the same time, it would leave some traces that would compromise him, in order to gather enough evidence for his arrest. I reported what had happened to a lawyer, and the computer forensic team decided to raid the stranger's home. The lawyer told me that they had found the stalker, who had stolen funds from several members of a community, emptying their accounts completely. But the forensic experts also managed to find an encrypted server that revealed highly complex malware, which could have been used both in the community where he posted and at the university where he taught. Later, when everything had returned to normal, my colleague smiled and said to me, “You've managed to save your savings and your retirement, but you've also saved the university from absolute disaster.”
