Sarathy Korwar – Where is he at home, where is he rooted and how does all this fit together?

He was born in the USA but grew up in India. His first exposure to the rhythm of jazz was when he heard interpretations and compositions by Ahmad Jamal and John Coltraine on the radio. But he obviously felt that music was a rather shaky mainstay, so he decided to study environmental sciences. He had barely completed this successfully when he returned to the tabla, the Indian version of a drum set (percussion). And he quickly became a sought-after session musician, which prompted him to take up Western percussion techniques. He then moved to London, where he quickly established himself on the British jazz scene. He toured with Kamasi Washington, Anoushka Shankar, Yussef Kamaal and Moses Boyd. To date, Korwar has released three studio albums and several live recordings. All of them have one thing in common, which is best reflected in the title of the live album released in 2018: ‘My East is Your West’

Wo zuhause, wo verwurzelt und wie fügt sich all das zusammen?

Zwar in den USA geboren, aber in Indien aufgewachsen, kam Sarathy Korwar erstmals in den Kontakt mit dem Rhythmus des Jazz, als er Interpretationen und Kompositionen von Ahmad Jamal und John Coltraine im Radio zu hören bekam. Doch schien ihm das Standbein Musik offenbar ziemlich wackelig und so entschied er sich für das Studium der Umweltwissenschaften. Kaum hatte er dies erfolgreich abgeschlossen, griff er doch wieder zur Tabla, der indischen Variante eines Schlagzeugs (Perkussion). Schnell wuchs er zu einem gefragten Session-Musiker heran, was ihn dazu bewog sich auch mit der westlichen Schlagzeug-Technik zu befassen. Es folgte der Umzug nach London, wo er sich innerhalb kürzester Zeit in der britischen Jazzszene etablierte. Er tourte mit Kamasi Washington, Anoushka Shankar, Yussef Kamaal und Moses Boyd. Bis jetzt hat Korwar drei Studio-Alben und mehrere Livemitschnitte veröffentlicht. Alle zeigen eine Gemeinsamkeit auf, die der Titel des 2018 veröffentlichen Live-Albums am ehesten widerspiegelt: »My East is Your West«.

Sarāb – Arabian sounds from the French capital

What once began with a guitar and a remarkable voice quickly grew into a six-piece formation that combines traditional music with jazz-rock and makes critics suspect that they are witnessing a chimerical adventure at concerts. The project was born from the meeting of guitarist Baptiste Ferrandis and singer Climène Zarkan, whose father is from Syria and who trained at the conservatories in Damascus and Lyon. Sarāb means ‘mirage’ in Arabic, Climène's ‘dream’ of merging her Middle Eastern musical history with Western music. She is supported by a young generation of jazz musicians whose outstanding technique serves their love of hybrid music: Thibault Gomez on Rhodes, Timothée Robert on bass, Paul Berne on drums and Robinson Khoury, whose trombone blends beautifully with Climène's voice. After a self-titled debut album in 2019, the album ‘Arwāh Hurra’ (‘free souls’) in 2021 and then an EP ‘I want the world to know’ in 2023 fuelled the remarkable journey of the group, who like to surround themselves with guests such as the Egyptian saz virtuoso Abdallah Abozekry. Equipped with a strong musical identity, Sarāb offers us its electrifying trance.

Arabische Klänge aus der französischen Hauptstadt

Was einst mit einer Gitarre und der bemerkenswerten Stimme begann, wuchs schnell zu einer sechsköpfigen Formation heran, die traditionelle Musik mit Jazz-Rock vereint und bei Kritikern die Vermutung aufkommen lässt, bei Konzerten einem schimärischen Abenteuer beizuwohnen. Polyrhytmics – From the Seattle underground to the world stages of Funk-Jazz

This is how music critics regard the musical development of Polyrhytmics: ‘Now in their thirteenth year, the band's sound has evolved after six albums, several EPs and live releases. The virtuosic musicianship and musical conversation they've built over the past decade of relentless touring has led them to a psych-funk that fills a room with a menacing mood where anything can happen - at times reminiscent of their brighter and more cinematic Fela influences, but also a darker and grittier turn towards a more progressive sonic palette.’ As the band's name suggests, rhythm is what we're going to get. They bring elements of funk, psychedelia, soul, progressive jazz, afrobeat and R&B into their sound. As one commentator on one of their Youtube clips remarked, ‘If Lettuce and Snarky Puppy had a baby, it would sound something like this’. Heavy guitar work, a punchy horn section, melodic funky bass and keyboard wizardry combine on their latest album Caldera to create fireworks, a collaboration of the most fruitful kind. The band consists of Ben Bloom (guitar), Grant Schroff (drums), Nathan Spicer (keys), Lalo Bello and Karl Olson (drums), bassist Jason Gray, Scott Morning (trumpet), Elijah Clark (trombone) and Art Brown (saxophone and flute).

Aus dem Untergrund Seattles auf die Weltbühneen des Funk-Jazz

Den musikalischen Werdegang von Polyrhytmics betrachtet die Musikkritik so: „Im dreizehnten Jahr ihres Bestehens hat sich der Sound der Band nach sechs Alben, mehreren EPs und Live-Veröffentlichungen weiter entwickelt. Die virtuose Musikalität und die musikalische Konversation, die sie in den vergangenen zehn Jahren auf unermüdlichen Tourneen aufgebaut haben, haben sie zu einem Psych-Funk geführt, der einen Raum mit einer drohenden Stimmung füllt, in der alles passieren kann - manchmal erinnern sie an ihre helleren und cineastischen Fela-Einflüsse, aber auch an eine düstere und dunklere Hinwendung zu einer progressiveren Klangpalette.“ Wie der Name der Band schon andeutet, ist Rhythmus das, was wir bekommen werden. Heftige Gitarrenarbeit, ein druckvoller Bläsersatz, melodischer Funky-Bass und Keyboard-Zauberei vereinen sich auf ihrem neuesten Album Caldera zu einem Feuerwerk, einer Zusammenarbeit der fruchtbarsten Art.
