I have invited artists to today's jazz matinee to spice up the start of May with their freshly pressed vinyl records. There is certainly something for every taste. First up is a band that has been proving for years that country sounds can also be integrated into jazz.

Zur heutigen Jazz-Matinee habe ich die Künstler eingeladen, die mit frisch gepressten Vinyl-Platten uns den Start in den Monat Mai musikalisch aufpeppen möchten. Mit Sicherheit ist für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei. Den Anfang übernimmt eine Band, die seit Jahren beweist, dass auch Country-Klänge sich in den Jazz integrieren lassen.

Steven Troch Band – The Dawning

This is the band's fourth attempt to prove that the typical sounds of the American Southwest can indeed find a home in jazz. The compositions not only have an entirely new sound, but also fit perfectly with the stories told. This mixture seems perfect. Supporting Steven Troch are guitarist Matti De Rijcke, bassist Liesbeth Sprangers and drummer Dennis de Gier. From time to time, Matt T. Mahony completes the ensemble with his harmonica and guitar. The album is a thoughtful, sometimes cheerful and deeply American departure into the new day.

Es ist der vierte Versuch der Band unter Beweis zu stellen, dass die typischen Klänge des amerikanischen Südwestens sehr wohl im Jazz ein Zuhause finden können. Dies verleiht den Kompositionen nicht nur einen vollkommen neuen Klang, sondern passt auch bestens zu den erzählten Geschichten. Die Mischung scheint perfekt. Steven Troch wird dabei unterstützt von dem Gitarristen Matti De Rijcke, der Bassistin Liesbeth Sprangers und dem Schlagzeuger Dennis de Gier. Ab und an komplettiert Matt T. Mahony mit der Mundharmonika und seiner Gitarre das Ensemble. Das Album ist eine nachdenkliche, manchmal fröhliche und tief aus den amerikanischen Wurzeln heraus beschriebenen Aufbruch in den neuen Tag.

Violetta Parasini - I Used To Have Nothing To Lose But Now I Have You

This Austrian composer and producer brings with her an album that is full of melancholy, emotion and inner movement. Feminine fragility and sensual depth. A hint of pop, the typical style of a singer-songwriter with elements of jazz. When Violetta Parisini sings about the upheavals of a changing everyday life, about love, fear, brokenness - and ultimately about the strength to stand up again in all the chaos. Her songs range from the need to retreat (‘I just’, ‘no need’) to the unconditional love for a small being (‘I used to have nothing to lose but now I have you’) to the refusal to fulfil society's expectations of a ‘good mother’ (‘bad mother’). From the first to the last note, all the songs were created by the artist. Peter Rom (guitar), Hanibal Scheutz (bass), Sixtus Preiss (sound design, mixing) and Maximilian Walch (mastering in Violetta Parasini's recording studio) only joined in for the recording.

Die österreichische Komponistin und Produzentin bringt ein Album mit, welches voll gestopft ist von Melancholie, Emotionen und innerer Bewegung. Femininer Zerbrechlichkeit und sinnlicher Tiefe. Ein Hauch von Pop, der typische Stil einer Singer-Songwriterin mit den Elementen des Jazz. Violetta Parisini singt von den Erschütterungen eines sich wandelnden Alltags, von Liebe, Angst, Zerrissenheit - und schließlich von der Kraft, sich in all dem Chaos wieder aufzurichten. Von Songs über das Bedürfnis nach Rückzug („I just“, „no need“) über die bedingungslose Liebe zu einem kleinen Wesen („I used to have nothing to lose but now I have you“) bis hin zur Weigerung, den gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen an eine „gute Mutter“ zu entsprechen („bad mother“). Alle Songs wurden von der Künstlerin vom ersten bis zum letzten Ton gestaltet. Erst zur Aufnahme fanden sich dann noch Peter Rom (Gitarre), Hanibal Scheutz (Bass), Sixtus Preiss (Sounddesign, M ixing) und Maximilian Walch (Mastering im Tonstudio von Violetta Parasini ein.

Nadia Maria - River

The introduction to the artist, who is also presenting her new album, I leave to the music critic, who (in my opinion) has found the right words. ‘ This album, sung and played with great dedication and charismatic presence, is a kind of narrative in sounds, words and finely moulded phrases. It is an album that flows unhurriedly, almost floating, while the singer touches us tenderly with her extraordinary voice. This work demands attention, time and inner peace from the listener - it is best experienced with eyes closed, after a long day, in a moment of complete relaxation.’ To be more precise, ‘River’ is not exclusively the work of the Iranian-born musician, lyricist and painter who now lives in Germany (Bergisch-Gladbach), but the result of a collaboration between two friends. Berlin producer Céline Rudolph and Nadia Maria are a prime example of two people who have each other's backs in good times and bad. This has resulted in wonderful melodies and lyrics, which the artist describes as follows: ‘It's okay. I surrender myself. To life, to love, to the rain. To the flow, to the river.’

Die Heranführung an die Künstlerin, die ebenfalls ihr neues Album vorstellt, überlasse ich dem Musikkritiker, der (meiner Ansicht nach) die richtigen Worte gefunden hat. „Dieses Album, gesungen und gespielt mit großer Hingabe und charismatischer Präsenz, ist eine Art Erzählung in Tönen, Worten und fein geformten Phrasen. Die Musik fließt gemächlich, fast schwebend, während die Sängerin uns mit ihrer außergewöhnlichen Stimme zärtlich berührt. Es ist ein Werk, das Aufmerksamkeit, Zeit und innere Ruhe vom Hörer verlangt – am besten erlebt man es mit geschlossenen Augen, nach einem langen Tag, im Moment völliger Entspannung.“ Genauer betrachtet, ist „River“ nicht ausschließlich das Werk von der gebürtigen Iranerin und jetzt in Deutschland (Bergisch-Gladbach) lebenden Musikerin, Lyrikerin und Malerin, sondern das Resultat einer Zusammenarbeit zweier Freundinnen. Die Berliner Produzentin Céline Rudolph und Nadia Maria sind geradezu ein Paradebeispiel für zwei Menschen, die sich in guten wie in schlechten Zeiten gegenseitig den Rücken stärken. Entstandn sind wunderbare Melodien und Texte, die die Künstlerin wie folgt beschreibt: „Es ist okay. Ich ergebe mich. Dem Leben, der Liebe, dem Regen. Dem Fluss, dem River.“

Manuel Pasquinelli – Heartbeat Drumming: Bellmund Session

In simple terms, the album could be described as follows: An exceptional experiment and equally exceptional music. The album has neither a clear beginning nor a definite end - you could listen to it in an endless loop, as an incessant stream of sound that can accompany us through life. It is music that can be experienced with concentration and attention, but also as an atmospheric background for everyday life, a walk or a workout. Swiss drummer Manuel Pasquinelli explains his new album in his own words: ‘Playing drums in this way is an intense, I would even say transcendent experience. I use my heart as a natural, irregular metronome and constantly adjust the tempo of my drumming. Connected to my inner rhythm, I hover between total freedom and total dependence at the same time, while the conscious and unconscious ‘I myself’ work together.

Wenn man es sich einfach gestalten möchte, könnte das Album so beschrieben werden: Ein außergewöhnliches Experiment und eine ebenso außergewöhnliche Musik. Dieses Album hat weder einen klaren Anfang noch ein definitives Ende – man könnte es in einer Endlosschleife hören, als einen unaufhörlichen Klangstrom, der uns durchs Leben begleiten kann. Es ist Musik, die man konzentriert und aufmerksam erleben kann, aber auch als atmosphärischen Hintergrund für den Alltag, einen Spaziergang oder ein Training. Der schweizer Schlagzeuger Manuel Pasquinelli erklärt sein neues Album mit eigenen Worten „Auf diese Weise Schlagzeug zu spielen ist eine intensive, ich würde sogar sagen, eine transzendente Erfahrung. Ich nehme mein Herz als natürliches, unregelmäßiges Metronom und passe das Tempo meines Schlagzeugspiels ständig an. Verbunden mit meinem inneren Rhythmus, schwebe ich gleichzeitig zwischen totaler Freiheit und totaler Abhängigkeit, während das bewusste und das unbewusste Ich zusammenarbeiten".

Caro Trischler – When You Know You Know

‘ ’When you find that deeply rooted gut feeling again, it's a sign that everything is happening at the right time, then it's time for an album like this. Perfectly expressed by the English phrase ‘When You Know You Know’,’ says Caro Trischler. Following North e Sul, this is now the young artist's second album, but the first for which all the lyrics were written by her. The deciding factor was probably the question she more or less posed to herself and it sounded like this: How can I succeed in writing songs that are just as beautiful as the ones I love so much? Caro Trischler (together with pianist Ulf Kleiner) has obviously found the right formula. A pinch of Norah Jones, a little Melody Gardot and a lot of inspiration from Steely Dan - the warm soundscape of voice, guitar, Fender Rhodes, subtle beats and sensitive arrangements make this album special. Music that touches, comforts and embraces - without any pretence.

„Wenn man dieses tief verankerte Bauchgefühl wiederfindet, ist es ein Zeichen, dass alles zur richtigen Zeit geschieht, dann ist es Zeit für ein solches Album. Bestens ausgedrückt durch die englische Redewendung »When You Know You Know«“, sagt Caro Trischler. Nach North e Sul ist dies nun das zweite Album der jungen Künstlerin aber das erste für das alle Texte aus ihrer Feder stammen. Ausschlaggebend dafür war wohl die Frage, die sie mehr oder weniger an sich selbst richtete Und die klang so: Wie kann es mir gelingen Lieder zu schreiben, die genauso schön sind wie die, die ich so sehr liebe? Ganz offensichtlich hat Caro Trischler (zusammen mit dem Pianisten Ulf Kleiner) die passende Formel dazu gefunden. Eine Prise von Norah Jones, ein wenig Melody Gardot und viel Inspiration vonseiten Steely Dan.Die warme Klangwelt aus Stimme, Gitarre, Fender Rhodes, dezenten Beats und feinfühligen Arrangements macht dieses Album besonders. Musik, die berührt, tröstet, umarmt – ganz ohne Kalkül.
