The lady was gone. He had accompanied her to her house. They had talked, laughed, shared moments that felt easy. But now, his face displayed no happiness..because he had accompanied the lady.
It was just a coffee date. By default, by society’s script, he was bound to walk her home. Maybe this was training for a deeper companionship.
He gazed ahead as he walked down the pavement, but his gaze was only that, a stare. No emotion.
Accompany the lady, his mind echoed. Will she accompany me when I pop the question?
And then, a sharper thought: What if I end up just being the “accompany the lady” guy? The guy who doesn’t get the lady at all?
Involuntarily, he shrugged, as if one thought had quietly countered the other.
He turned the corner onto the main road and felt relief at the noise of traffic; it drowned his thoughts.
At the bus stop he sat, quiet, alone, as if lost in deep thought.
After all, he had accompanied the lady.
