Lagos is a city of tension,a place where two worlds move side by side but never truly meet except in certain moments.
This picture caught a range rover moving through the dust and noise of a local market. A lot was on my mind at the sight of luxury passing by scraps of nylon and broken ground.
Clearly the rich and poor are living completely different lives but they both need the market to survive. The rich come in their cars, tinted glass rolled halfway down maybe with a driver or house help sent to buy what they need. they often buy in bulk sometimes they don’t even step out fully they just point ask for a basket of tomatoes a bag of rice or cartons of frozen food, the money flows quick and they are gone
The poor come differently they carry small nylon bags like the one in the picture. they count every naira before they buy or walking around comparing prices they spend more time bargaining, sweating pushing through the crowd because every little coin matters and yet the market brings both the rich and the poor together.
it doesn’t matter if you come with a luxury car or slippers half worn out you are still looking for food and survival in the same space the same noise of sellers calling will enter your ears the same smell of meat frying and fish drying will surround you, even the same road dust touches both clothes and tires
lagos is tough because it forces both the rich and poor to fight different battles but in the market those battles touch that is where rags and riches meet even if just for a moment
Thanks for engaging. Wealth Grammy
