Vor wenigen Wochen reiste ich gemeinsam mit zwei guten Freunden nach Südafrika, um das südlichste Land Afrikas im Zuge einer Rundreise näher kennen zu lernen. Wir hatten uns im Vorfeld intensiv mit Südafrika auseinandergesetzt und entschieden uns für eine Route von Johannesburg über die Panorama Route in den Krüger Nationalpark, durch Swasiland, weiter in den Hluhluwe Nationalpark, an die Küste nach St. Lucia und von Durban mit einem Flug zurück Kapstadt.
Südafrika ist bekannt für seine einzigartige Naturlandschaft, die artenreiche Tierwelt und die fröhlichen Einwohner. Wir hatten im Vorfeld unserer Reise sehr viel Positives vernommen und sind dementsprechend mit sehr hohen Erwartungen angereist. Heute kann ich euch sagen, dass diese Erwartungen bei Weitem übertroffen wurden. Südafrika ist mit seiner landschaftlichen Beschaffenheit einzigartig und extrem facettenreich. Ich war von diesem Land schwer beeindruckt und darf nun die schönsten Plätze mit euch teilen.
A few weeks ago I travelled together with two good friends to South Africa to get to know the southernmost country of Africa in the course of a round trip. In the run-up we had intensively dealt with South Africa and decided on a route from Johannesburg via the Panorama Route to the Kruger National Park, through Swaziland, further to the Hluhluwe National Park, to the coast to St. Lucia and from Durban with a flight back to Cape Town.
South Africa is known for its unique natural landscape, the species-rich animal world and the cheerful inhabitants. We had heard a lot of positive things in the run-up to our trip and accordingly we arrived with very high expectations. Today I can tell you that these expectations were exceeded by far. South Africa is unique and extremely multifaceted with its landscape. I was deeply impressed by this country and now I can share the most beautiful places with you.

Unsere Anreise erfolgte von Wien mit einem Direktflug nach Kapstadt, wo wir nur kurz zwischennächtigen und schon früh am nächsten Morgen nach Johannesburg weiterflogen. Mit einem Mietwagen fuhren wir nach Graskop, wo wir unsere erste Station erreichten die sogenannte Panorama Route im Nordosten Südafrikas.
Our arrival was from Vienna with a direct flight to Cape Town, where we only stayed for a short time and flew on to Johannesburg early the next morning. With a rental car we drove to Graskop, where we reached our first stop the so called Panorama Route in the northeast of South Africa.
Die Panorama Route ist eine Touristenattraktion in den Transvaal-Drakensbergen in der Provinz Mpumalanga im Nordosten Südafrikas. Sie ist wegen der steilen Abhänge mit Aussichten weit ins Flachland des Lowveld und interessanter Felsbildungen entlang der Straße eine Region mit bedeutsamen Sehenswürdigkeiten. Entlang dem in Nord-Süd-Richtung verlaufenden Steilhang bricht das südafrikanische Hochland (Highveld) in das bis zu 1.000 Meter tiefer gelegene Flachland (Lowveld) ab, wo sich unter anderem der Krüger Nationalpark befindet.
The Panorama Route is a tourist attraction in the Transvaal-Drakensberg in the province Mpumalanga in the northeast South Africa. It is a region with important sights because of the steep slopes with views far into the lowveld plain and interesting rock formations along the road. Along the steep slope running in north-south direction, the South African highlands (Highveld) break off into the lowlands (Lowveld), which are up to 1,000 metres lower, where, among other things, the Kruger National Park is located.

Der Blyde River Canyon ist mit 26 Kilometer Länge und 800 Meter Tiefe einer der größten Canyons der Welt. The Blyde River Canyon is one of the largest canyons in the world, 26 kilometers long and 800 meters deep.

Die Panorama Route bietet viele weitere Ausblicke in die Ebene, dazu zählt unter anderem das „Gods Window“. Dieser Ausblick blieb uns an diesem Tag aber wegen des dichten Nebels leider verwehrt. An der Strecke liegen auch zahlreiche schön geformte Canyons wie der Blyde River Canyon, der an den bizarren der Bourke’s Luck Potholes seinen Ausgang nimmt. An den Flussverläufen entstanden durch Erosion viele Wasserfälle wie die Macmac Falls, Lisbon Falls und Berlin Falls. Im Nahbereich der Panorama Route liegen auch die historische Goldgräberstadt Pilgrim’s Rest, die seit 1986 ein Nationaldenkmal ist, sowie die Sudwala Caves.
The Panorama Route offers many more views of the plain, including the "Gods Window ". Unfortunately, we were not able to enjoy this view on this day because of the dense fog. Along the route there are also numerous beautifully shaped canyons like the Blyde River Canyon, which starts at the bizarre Bourke's Luck Potholes. At the river courses many waterfalls like the Macmac Falls, Lisbon Falls and Berlin Falls were created by erosion. In the vicinity of the Panorama Route are also the historic gold mining town Pilgrim's Rest, which has been a national monument since 1986, and the Sudwala Caves.

Am Ende belohnte wir uns mit einem typisch afrikanischen Antilopenspieß und einem Bier am Fluss. In the end we rewarded ourselves with a typical African antelope skewer and a beer at the river.

Diese Landschaft dieser Region erinnert teilweise sogar an meine Heimat Österreich. Die Orte und Naturschauplätze sind in dieser Region sehr hoch gelegen, weshalb das Klima hier etwas milder ist. Überhaupt regnet es in den Sommermonaten vermehrt in Südafrika, sodass sich die Landschaft überwiegend im saftigen Grün präsentiert. Meine nächste Station ist der Krüger Nationalpark, ich hoffe ihr seid wieder mit dabei wenn ich über die wilden Tiere Afrikas berichte.
This landscape of this region partly even reminds of my home country Austria. The places and natural sites are very high in this region, so the climate here is a bit milder. Generally it rains in the summer months more often in South Africa, so that the landscape presents itself predominantly in the juicy green. My next stop is the Kruger National Park, I hope you will be there again when I report about the wild animals of Africa.
