Farmers' Woes: Rain, Rain Come Along

Hello Hive family, I hope our day is going well.its my first post here @homestead.

Last night, Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, experienced rainfall for the first time in almost two months. The moment I heard the drizzling sound, I quickly intensified my prayers that it wouldn’t stop as just a drizzle but turn into a real downpour. To my surprise, when I stepped outside, I found other members of my family doing the same.

I may not be a farmer, but this prolonged drought has deeply affected farmers—and, by extension, all of us because we are food consumers.

Before the rain ceased some weeks ago, I observed that many people around my neighbourhood and beyond had cultivated different crops on almost every available piece of land. I was excited and even told my mum that this would bring down the prices of food items this season. But to my disappointment, weeks passed and prices kept rising. For example, I love yams so much; by this time of year, new ones should normally flood the market. Instead, the reverse is the case, and the few available remain costly.

Though I know little about farming, I have made friends on this blockchain—like @monica-ene and @johnny023—who share their experiences in the @homesteading community. From their posts and pictures, it’s clear how devastating this break in rainfall has been to crops and harvests. Honestly, some of the images are heartbreaking.

As a sickle cell warrior, the rainy season is already one of our most challenging times. But this year has been unusual: despite the delay in rainfall, the weather has remained inexplicably cold, causing frequent pain crises and hospitalisations among warriors like me.

Still, I earnestly pray that the rains will continue, as they have shown signs of resuming. I pray our farmers recover, because many took loans to fund this planting season. It breaks my heart to think that something as natural as delayed rain could lead them into such heavy losses.

So, instead of singing “Rain, rain, go away,” my song this season is: “Rain, rain, come along.”
