Rain Palava: Who Are The Real Victims-Farmers, Retailers or Consumers

Good day, Hive. How is our weekend coming along? Weekends are always busy for me with sales and deliveries of my natural, healthy drinks.

Today, after my usual routine of sales and deliveries, I headed straight to my town's local fruit market. There, fruits are assumed to be cheaper and sold at wholesale prices.

Natural fruits like pineapple, watermelon, cucumber, apples, and spices such as ginger and garlic are part of the raw materials for my drinks.

But hmmm… just like in my last few visits, prices have just refused to come down. And I keep asking myself: is it the Nigerian factor where prices hardly ever drop, or are the sellers’ complaints about the long break in rainfall affecting crops genuine?

Honestly, I don’t know what to believe anymore. The rains indeed stopped for a while in this part, but from what I can see, the fruits are still available , just costly. Perhaps if the rains had been regular, the market would have been flooded with fruits, but would that have truly brought the prices down? I doubt it.

We’ve had two heavy downpours in the past week, and I’m really happy about that. Hopefully, if it continues, farmers and consumers will smile because, seriously, the prices right now are killing.

What shocks me the most is ginger. The price of ginger has skyrocketed — it has gone up almost four times in the last few weeks and has even become scarce. At this point, I’ve developed a phobia of asking the price whenever I see it. It’s that frustrating.

Still, in fairness, buying in bulk at the fruit market saves me a lot compared to buying from the nearby vendors around my neighbourhood. But can I blame them? They’re unsure what the prices will look like each time they go to restock. I honestly imagine they must be just as confused as I am.

I genuinely love farming, but I haven’t had the opportunity to explore it yet. That makes it harder for me to truly understand the seasons or how long some fruits can be stored. I can’t say which fruits are in or out of season anymore. I was hopeful that prices would go down, but they didn’t.

So maybe it’s time to face the reality that prices hardly ever come down and just stay hopeful regardless. Overall, I still wish our farmers well because they truly bear the weight of it all.

Thank you for passing by, and have a lovely weekend. 🌸
