This morning’s energy felt completely different from most days. In fact, it was one of those rare mornings when I woke up feeling well-rested and full of life.
I went through my usual morning routine and then decided to take my physio exercises outdoors instead of indoors as I normally do. I was excited to soak in the fresh air.
While exercising, my eyes wandered to the garden. I noticed that the pawpaw seeds I had thrown there a few weeks ago had sprouted and now had big, healthy leaves. I couldn’t resist. I walked straight to admire my baby pawpaw tree.
As I took a little tour of the garden, I noticed something else, my beloved lemongrass plants, which had been struggling just weeks ago, were now vibrant and full of life.
And that’s when the craving hit, a steaming cup of lemongrass ginger tea. Without hesitation, I cut a few fresh strands, headed to the kitchen, washed them, grated some ginger, added cloves and black pepper, and set it all to boil.
The aroma was irresistible. I poured myself two cups! It was such a perfect start to the day.
As a sickle cell warrior, I especially appreciate that every ingredient in lemongrass ginger tea is packed with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and antisickling properties, wonderful for my health.
For anyone who’d like to try it, here’s my simple recipe:
About 10 strands of lemongrass leaves
10 pieces of cloves and a few black pepper seeds
Fresh ginger (amount depends on how spicy you like it)
Boil all ingredients together for five to seven minutes, then strain your tea out. Enjoy plain, or sweeten with honey or sugar. I had mine with sugar today, and it was delightful.
What started as a decision to take my exercises outside ended with a warm cup of my favourite tea and I hope to have many more mornings like this.
