Let's talk about purpose, seeing that it's not a word tossed around as easily as ‘goal’.
The million dollar question, “what is your purpose in life?” often causes people to ramble or simply list out short term goals. When I was asked this question a few days ago, my mind went into a spiral. I found myself dismissing short-term goals mentally as I searched for a deeper purpose. Yet, I must admit, I still haven't clearly identified what that purpose is because maybe I'm not just ready to.
Don't get me wrong, I have many admirable and achievable goals. But I wonder, if I accomplish all these goals today, what comes next? I believe this is where purpose comes in.
When structured well, goals serve as stepping stones designed to fulfil different aspects of our greater purpose.
While doing something I enjoy doing, watching a movie, I gained insight into a particular character's purpose in life. This character was enigmatic and powerful, and though he eventually found love( one of his goals) and seemed content with his life, his true purpose was the redemption of his erratic and vicious brother. Once that redemption was achieved, it felt as if his life came to an abrupt halt. Nothing made sense anymore. Although he had the option to continue living and possibly find another purpose along the line, he chose to die because the purpose that had driven him since childhood was finally fulfilled.
Unlike our narrow and time bound goals, purpose is broad and endearing. Purpose defines the meaning behind actions and life itself while goals are practical milestones used to navigate along that path.
To a religious individual, their purpose in life may be to win as many souls as possible for God. Another's purpose may be to serve life and when they're not serving, they feel unfulfilled and unaccomplished. Let's not forget about those whose sole purpose is to amass as much superficial wealth as humanly possible.
Our goals should align with and complement our purpose in order to make meaningful progress. Unlike goals, which are specific targets we set to achieve within a certain timeframe, purpose is an ongoing drive; a profound reason for existence that gives life and actions meaning. Our purpose is sometimes rooted in our core values and beliefs, guiding us continuously rather than a one time thing.
Least I forget, purpose isn't rigid or fixed. It can evolve over time as we grow, unlearn old beliefs and embrace new perspectives. The purpose we had as children may not outrightly change as we grow, but there will be variations as our understanding of life expands.
It is quite inspiring to see people fulfil their purpose in life, but not everyone gets this opportunity. Some become incapacitated along the way, others lose their lives and some simply stop trying. The chance to continue each day is, in itself, a blessing.
