While searching for movies to add to my “to-watch” list, a friend recommended the movie “The Accountant 2”. Before adding it to my list I did some research on the first installment of the movie “The Accountant” and thought it wise to actually see the original piece before the sequel. Today, I’d be sharing my views on the first Installment.
About The Movie
This action crime thriller film centers around Christian Wolff, an autistic mathematical genius who works as a forensic accountant for dangerous criminal organizations. Judging from the type of clients he deals with, Christian is always at risk of attack. Soon enough, he gets a contract to audit a robotics company, Living Robotics. As Christian investigates, he discovers that over 60 million dollars has been embezzled. With this discovery comes new threats and amidst the threats, Christian is still determined to get to the bottom of the embezzlement because he has a knack for perfection.
Directed by Gavin O’Connor and released on the 14th of October, 2016, this movie is an action thriller with elements of crime and psychological drama. The movie has a runtime of 128 minutes and stars actors like Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K Simmons and Jon Bernthal.
My Opinion
Christian’s journey from childhood to adulthood as an autistic genius is quite intriguing. This journey explored both the challenges and extraordinary abilities associated with high functioning autism. The military style training by his father further prepared him for both mental and physical survival. To some point, this journey was very admirable.
The characters in this movie all performed beautifully but I have to give more accolades to Ben Affleck, who played the role of Christian Wolff. His acting was intense and powerful. He acted out each scene as if he was living his truth. The rest of the main and supporting characters all did their best to make the movie a success. The flashbacks enriched the character’s backgrounds even more
The multi-layered plot of this movie is also something worth mentioning. It was original and quite frankly, very far from what I expected from a movie titled ‘The Accountant’. I expected to see a whole lot of book keeping, calculations and mind games but this movie didn't just moderately give all of these, it went ahead to dive deep into the life of a very interesting character.
The movie touched themes of autism and neurodiversity, high-stakes financial dilemmas, family dynamics including trauma, justice, morality and revenge. I like how Christian’s father, who was a military officer, never gave up on him. Also, instead of imposing certain rules and beliefs on Christian, his father made him carefully think his decisions through before making them.
The action scenes were well choreographed and given that Christian was a perfectionist, he always made clean headshots. His dexterity at martial arts was also very impressive. One of my favourite action scenes was when he neutralized an attacker using his military style training, with minimal hand movements but lethal precision.
