Today I'm here with a story that's one of those where the romance moves forward and backward, forward and backward, and when it finally does move forward, the anime ends with no announcement of a second season. Yes, it's frustrating, and I kept watching because I found the animation beautiful and the character designs reminded me a bit of the anime Orange. I want to talk about it because it touches on some very compelling themes, especially divorce, depression, social context, and many other things that undoubtedly make it captivating.

# Ao haru ride (アオハライド)…

Released in 2014, directed by Ai Yoshimura and produced by Production I.G; created by Io Sakisaka, it is a comedy, drama, romance, and slice-of-life series, with a total of 12 episodes and 2 OVAs, plus a live-action adaptation.

# Regarding the plot…

The story begins when Futaba Yoshioka is in middle school. She's very popular because of her sweet and feminine personality, attracting a lot of bullying from the boys, except for one, Kou Tanaka, who is calm and kind. She ends up falling in love with him. However, after several events, their romance fails to blossom, especially since Kou moves away.

Years later, in high school, we see a very different Futaba, less attractive, because after all the attention she received, she preferred to be "less feminine" and thus avoid the men's stares. However, she also reunites with Kou, but, to her surprise, he too has changed: now he is a cold and distant boy. The story follows these two, one lost in the memories of who she was and understanding who she is now, while the other is marked by the pain and events of his past. Will they be able to heal the wounds of the past and resolve the feelings of the past? Will they each accept their new selves?

# Personal opinion

I must admit that I got frustrated when Futaba and Kou's relationship kept regressing. However, as you empathized with their past, you began to understand each of their attitudes. Plus, they're teenagers, a stage where we're much more driven by emotions than reason, so you understand why they behave the way they do. The best part is seeing their characters grow, and that's when the story really draws you in. That said, I also found the protagonist's attitude quite irritating, largely due to his past. He acted as a defense mechanism, and it frustrated me. Even so, he's a character with a lot of depth, and his relationship with the girl gradually felt like the anchor he needed to release all the conflict he carried inside.

The story itself presents us with how both characters wear masks, due to a past and social and family context that led them to take on roles different from their true selves. This is where you truly feel connected, because we have often had to do things simply "to be accepted" in a society where not conforming to its standards or being too much of something is frowned upon. Here, surrounding yourself with people who accept you as you are and who help you bring out and confront your true self, so you don't feel trapped, also plays a key role.

The animation, as I said, is beautiful with a very vibrant color palette that clearly conveys the emotions the characters are going through. The worst part is the damn ending, I mean, how could you leave me like that? Give me more! I want to know how their relationship develops much more 😫, and now that I remember this frustration, I'll have to resort to the manga.

Beautiful animation.

Character development, explored through complex themes.

Tension between the characters; although the uncertainty surrounding their relationship was agonizing, I must admit that they handled that romantic tension very well.

# Negative points…

-Sometimes the protagonist's attitude drove me crazy.

-The ending left me with a lump in my throat.

It's clearly a shojo anime through and through, so its biggest flaw is the lack of a satisfying conclusion, which might not appeal to everyone. However, its story and the relationships between its characters are what will surely keep you hooked.

Hoy vengo con una historia que, es de ese estilo que el romance avanza y retrocede, avanza y retrocede y, cuando por fin avanza, termina el anime y no hay anuncio de segunda temporada; si, es frustrante y me quede viéndola porque se me hacía bonito la animación y el diseño de sus personajes me recordaban un poco al del anime Orange. Quiero hablar de él porque toca temas bastantes atractivos, sobre todo como el divorcio, la depresión, el contexto social y muchas cosas, que, sin duda, lo vuelve cautivador.

# En cuanto a la trama…

La historia transcurre en un primer momento cuando, Futaba Yoshioka se encontraba en secundaria, la cual era muy popular por su personalidad dulce y femenina, atrayendo mucho acoso por parte de los chicos, menos el de uno, Kou Tanaka, quien era tranquilo amable, por lo que, termina enamorada de él. Sin embargo, tras varios sucesos, su romance no pudo florecer, aunado de que, Kou se mudó.

Años después, en preparatoria, vemos a una Futaba muy cambiada, menos agraciada, pues con todo el acaso que recibió, prefirió ser “menos femenina” y así no tener las miradas de los hombres encima de ella; no obstante, también se reencuentra con Kou, pero, para su sorpresa, él también cambio de personalidad: ahora es un chico frío y distante. La historia seguirá a estos dos, una perdida en los recuerdos de quien fue y comprendiendo a su vez a quién es actualmente, mientras que el otro, está marcado por el dolor y los eventos de su pasado ¿Serán capaces de sanar las heridas del pasado y resolver los sentimientos del pasado? ¿aceptaran cada uno sus nuevas versiones?

# Opinión personal

Debo admitir que, me desesperaba cuando la relación entre Futaba y Kou retrocedía a cada rato, sin embargo, a medida que, uno empatizaba con su pasado, ibas comprendiendo las actitudes de cada uno, aunado que están en la adolescencia, una etapa donde nos dejamos llevar mucho más por las emociones que por la cabeza, ya entiendes porque se compartan de tal manera; lo mejor de todo es que se ve el crecimiento de sus personajes y ahí es cuando te va atrayendo mucho más la historia. Lo que sí, es que también me amotinaba mucho la actitud del protagonista, por mucho de su pasado y lo hacía como un mecanismo de defensa, sentía que pasaba y me desesperaba, aun así, es un personaje con mucha exploración y su relación con la chica, poco a poco se sentía como el ancla que necesitaba para dejar salir todo el conflicto que cargaba en su interior.

En sí, la historia nos plantea a su vez, como ambos llevan máscaras, por un pasado y contexto social y familiar que los llevo a tomar roles distintos a lo que su esencia es, donde realmente logras sentirte conectado, porque nos ha tocado en muchas ocasiones solo “para ser aceptado” en una sociedad que, si no eres acorde a sus estándares o eres mucho de algo, es mal visto. Aquí también juega un papel clave el de rodearse de personas que te acepten tal cual como eres y hacen relucir y confrontar tu verdadero ser, de manera tal que no te sientas en una jaula.

La animación como dije, es bonita con una paleta de colores muy vistosa y que deja en manifiesto las emociones por las que están pasando sus personajes. Lo peor de todo, es su pinche final, ósea ¿Cómo me dejas así? Dame más, quiero saber como se desarrolla mucho más su relación 😫, y, ahora que recuerdo esta frustración, tendré que recurrir al manga.

# Puntos positivos…

-Hermosa animación.

-Crecimiento de sus personajes, abordados desde temas complejos.

-Tensión entre sus personajes, aunque desesperaba el si o no de su relación, debo admitir que esa tensión romántica la supieron envolver muy bien.

# Puntos negativos…

-A veces me desesperaba la actitud del prota.

-El final, me dejo algo atorado en la garganta.

Claramente es un anime shojo desde las venas, por lo que, su gran defecto es que no hubo una conclusión para nada satisfactoria, que puede que eso no sea del agrado de muchos, sin embargo, su historia y relación entre sus personajes, es lo que seguramente te dejará enganchado.
