PhotoFeed Contest - Macro Photography Round 137 ~ Melon Plant Flowers

Hello Hivers....

This post is my entry for a macro photography contest hosted by @photofeed. If you'd like to participate, please read and follow the rules

The bright yellow flowers in the photo I'm sharing are the flowers of a melon plant. These flowers are a crucial part of the melon plant's life cycle, as they are where the melon fruit forms.

Melon flowers are typically bright yellow with five fairly large petals. They have a smooth texture, with distinct veins on each petal. These flowers grow among the broad, rough, hairy leaves of the melon plant. Melon plants are monoecious, meaning that each plant contains both male and female flowers. Male flowers produce only pollen. Female flowers have ovaries at the base of the petals, which will develop into melons after pollination.

Melon flowers play a crucial role in the fertilization process. Pollen from male flowers must be transferred to the stigma of female flowers, usually assisted by insects such as bees or by humans through artificial pollination techniques. If pollination is successful, the ovaries on the female flowers will enlarge and develop into sweet melons. However, if unsuccessful, the flowers will wilt and fall off.

For melon farmers, understanding the difference between male and female flowers is crucial to ensuring a successful harvest. Some commonly used techniques include maintaining the presence of pollinating insects, especially bees, manual pollination by transferring pollen from male flowers to female flowers using your hands or a small brush, and ensuring plant health to prevent flower drop.

The bright yellow melon flowers are not only beautiful to look at but also mark the beginning of a long journey that leads to the development of a sweet, succulent melon. With proper care, each female flower has the potential to develop into a fruit that can be enjoyed for its benefits and flavor.

Important Note: I wrote in Indonesian, then translated it using Google Translate. Regards @yayan
