The Secret in Their Eyes: when Argentine justice turns into a labyrinth
Hay películas que logran trascender el tiempo porque no solo cuentan una historia, sino que reflejan con crudeza y sensibilidad el espíritu de un país, esta película dirigida por Juan José Campanella (muy conocido en mi país) no es simplemente un policial o un drama romántico: es un espejo que nos devuelve la mirada, mostrándonos lo enmarañado, lo pasional y lo profundamente burocrático de la vida argentina.
There are films that manage to transcend time because they not only tell a story, but also reflect with rawness and sensitivity the spirit of a country. This film, directed by Juan José Campanella (well known in my country), is not simply a crime thriller or a romantic drama: it is a mirror that reflects us back, showing the tangled, the passionate, and the profoundly bureaucratic nature of Argentine life.
Desde la primera escena, la película nos coloca frente a la memoria. Benjamín Espósito (Ricardo Darín) intenta escribir una novela para exorcizar los fantasmas de un caso que lo marcó para siempre. Lo hace con torpeza, con la angustia de quien necesita encontrar un sentido a lo que vivió. Y allí, entre las páginas a medio corregir y los silencios de su oficina, se abre una ventana hacia uno de los grandes males de la Argentina: el aparato judicial, lleno de trámites, sellos, pasillos interminables y expedientes que parecen pesar más que las vidas que contienen. Porque lo que Campanella retrata con maestría no es solo un crimen atroz, sino la manera en que ese crimen queda atrapado en las telarañas de la burocracia. Los papeles se pierden, los jueces responden a intereses políticos, los procedimientos se ralentizan al punto de la desidia. En ese ambiente, la justicia deja de ser un derecho para transformarse en un lujo, y muchas veces en una farsa.
From the very first scene, the film places us face to face with memory. Benjamín Espósito (Ricardo Darín) tries to write a novel to exorcise the ghosts of a case that marked him forever. He does it clumsily, with the anguish of someone who needs to find meaning in what he experienced. And there, among the half-corrected pages and the silences of his office, a window opens onto one of Argentina’s great evils: the judicial apparatus, filled with procedures, stamps, endless corridors, and case files that seem to weigh more than the lives they contain. What Campanella masterfully portrays is not only a heinous crime, but the way that crime becomes trapped in the cobwebs of bureaucracy. Papers are lost, judges respond to political interests, procedures slow down to the point of neglect. In that environment, justice ceases to be a right and becomes a luxury, and many times a farce.
Cualquiera que haya tenido que hacer un trámite en Argentina, sea judicial o administrativo, reconoce en la película esa sensación de impotencia, mucho más tratándose de temas tan crudos como la vida y la muerte. La escena donde el asesino, después de haber sido condenado, es liberado gracias a contactos políticos, sintetiza una realidad conocida: el sistema no funciona como debería. Y no hablamos solo de los años ‘70, donde transcurre buena parte de la historia, sino de una continuidad histórica en la que el poder judicial muchas veces aparece como una maquinaria lenta, fría y distante de la gente común.
Anyone who has had to go through paperwork in Argentina, whether judicial or administrative, recognizes in the film that feeling of helplessness, even more so when dealing with matters as raw as life and death. The scene in which the murderer, after having been convicted, is released thanks to political connections, summarizes a familiar reality: the system does not work as it should. And we are not only talking about the 1970s, where much of the story takes place, but about a historical continuity in which the judiciary often appears as a slow, cold machine, distant from ordinary people.
Campanella no lo subraya de manera panfletaria, pero cualquiera que viva en Argentina sabe leer entre líneas. El guiño está ahí: la burocracia, más que un obstáculo técnico, es un reflejo de la falta de voluntad de un Estado que muchas veces prioriza sus intereses por sobre la verdad y la justicia.
Campanella does not underline it in a pamphleteering way, but anyone living in Argentina knows how to read between the lines. The hint is there: bureaucracy, more than a technical obstacle, is a reflection of the lack of will of a State that often prioritizes its own interests over truth and justice.
El gran acierto de la película es que no se queda en la denuncia, sino que protagoniza lo que raramente vemos, humanos dentro del sistema burocrático. Ricardo Darín, en el papel de Espósito, logra transmitir una mezcla de cansancio, obstinación y dignidad que lo convierte en un personaje entrañable, que, aunque su mirada cargue de tristeza y también de furia contenida, es la de alguien que se niega a aceptar que la injusticia se vuelva la norma. Con su compañero y amigo Guillermo Francella, como Pablo Sandoval, se luce en un rol dramático donde la fragilidad y la lealtad se entrelazan. Sandoval es un funcionario judicial que conoce el absurdo del sistema, que sabe reírse de él, pero que también se consume lentamente en sus propias frustraciones y adicciones.
The film’s great achievement is that it doesn’t stop at denouncing, but rather portrays what we rarely see: human beings inside the bureaucratic system. Ricardo Darín, in the role of Espósito, manages to convey a mix of weariness, stubbornness, and dignity that makes him an endearing character. Even though his gaze is burdened with sadness and contained fury, it is that of someone who refuses to accept injustice as the norm. Alongside his companion and friend Guillermo Francella, as Pablo Sandoval, he shines in a dramatic role where fragility and loyalty intertwine. Sandoval is a judicial employee who understands the absurdity of the system, who knows how to laugh at it, but who also slowly consumes himself in his own frustrations and addictions.
Más allá del crimen y del laberinto judicial, la película también habla de amor. No solo del amor imposible entre Espósito e Irene, marcado por las circunstancias y los silencios, sino también del amor por la "verdad" (obvio que coloco comillas, pero no hay estado sin memoria), por el deber y por la memoria. Y es también el motor que lo enfrenta a las miserias de la burocracia: porque la pasión por la justicia, aunque se choque contra sellos y expedientes, no puede apagarse del todo.
Beyond the crime and the judicial labyrinth, the film also speaks of love. Not only the impossible love between Espósito and Irene, marked by circumstances and silences, but also the love for “truth” (of course I put it in quotes, but there is no State without memory), for duty, and for memory itself. And it is also the driving force that confronts him with the miseries of bureaucracy: because the passion for justice, even when it collides with stamps and case files, cannot be completely extinguished.
El secreto de sus ojos es un ejercicio de memoria colectiva. Nos recuerda que detrás de cada expediente hay una vida que dejamos pasar por "reglas sin sentido", que detrás de cada sello hay un dolor que no puede ser reducido a un "trámite" burocrático, sino que interpela directamente a nuestra historia como país. En un contexto donde la burocracia suele ser excusa para la inacción, la película propone lo contrario: que la memoria y la pasión sean las armas para enfrentar la injusticia.
The Secret in Their Eyes is an exercise in collective memory. It reminds us that behind every file there is a life we let slip away because of “senseless rules,” that behind every stamp there is a pain that cannot be reduced to bureaucratic “paperwork,” but instead directly questions our history as a country. In a context where bureaucracy is often used as an excuse for inaction, the film proposes the opposite: that memory and passion be the weapons to confront injustice.
Una de las partes que me marco considerablemente fue la parte final (CUIDADO SPOILER) en donde se encuentra el protagonista en la casa del que fue novio de la chica asesinada, nos muestra una escena en donde vemos al asesino en una cárcel hecha por el "viudo", al que tristemente le dice "vos dijiste perpetua"... Vemos la venganza puesta en mano propia frente a la injusticia que se vive, dejándonos la pregunta si es justo lo que sucede.
One of the parts that left a considerable mark on me was the final part (SPOILER ALERT) where the protagonist finds himself in the house of the murdered girl's ex-boyfriend. It shows us a scene where we see the murderer in a prison made by the "widower", to whom he sadly says "you said life imprisonment"... We see revenge taken into one's own hands in the face of the injustice that is being experienced, leaving us to wonder if what is happening is fair.
