Quienes atraviesan el Ciclo Básico Común (CBC) saben que no se trata simplemente de materias introductorias. Es el filtro, el punto de partida, la base sobre la que se construye toda la carrera. El CBC tiene esa doble cara: es una oportunidad de adaptación al ritmo universitario, pero también es un campo minado para quienes no se organizan a tiempo y deben apropiarse de cosas que no es de su importancia educativa, aquí viene el dicho de "filtro", quienes ocupan carreras sociales deben pasar primero por materias exactas, algo que para muchos es algo difícil.
Anyone who goes through the Ciclo Básico Común (CBC) knows it is not just a set of introductory courses. It’s the filter, the starting point, the foundation on which the entire degree is built. The CBC has a double edge: it’s a chance to adapt to the university pace, but it’s also a minefield for those who don’t organize themselves in time and end up dealing with content that isn’t central to their field. That’s why people call it a “filter”: students aiming for social sciences must first pass exact/science courses—something many find hard.
Porque sí: la UBA exige. Si uno no empieza despacio, con constancia, con dedicación diaria, lo que al comienzo parece sencillo se transforma en una bola de nieve. Un examen perdido, un tema no leído, un apunte dejado para después, y la materia se vuelve cada vez más cuesta arriba. El CBC enseña la primera gran lección universitaria: la constancia vale más que el talento.
Because yes: UBA demands a lot. If you don’t start slowly, with consistency and daily dedication, what seems easy at first snowballs. One failed exam, one topic left unread, one set of notes postponed—and the course gets steeper and steeper. The CBC teaches the first great university lesson: consistency outweighs talent.
Algunas técnicas de estudio que ayudan a sobrevivir: no alcanza con “tener ganas”. Hace falta estrategia. Algunas técnicas básicas pueden marcar la diferencia, como el comenzar todas las materias con tiempo, dedicarse 1 - 2 horas por dia (todos los dias) hace del recorrido algo mas sencillo. A few study techniques that help you survive: wanting it is not enough. You need strategy. Some basic tactics can make a real difference—start every course early, and devote 1–2 hours per day (every day). It makes the journey far easier. Above all, do it with heart.
Simulacros de examen: practicar con parciales anteriores o ejercicios similares. No solo reduce la ansiedad, también muestra vacíos de conocimiento. Trabajo en grupo: armar redes, compartir apuntes, explicarle al otro. La UBA se transita mejor en comunidad que en soledad.
Mock exams: practice with past papers or similar exercises. It not only reduces anxiety—it also reveals knowledge gaps. Group work: build networks, share notes, explain concepts to each other. UBA is best navigated in community, not alone.
Pero no todo es técnica. Hay quienes llegan al CBC trabajando ocho horas, cuidando familiares, viajando largas distancias. La vida pesa, y muchas veces la universidad parece diseñada para quienes solo pueden estudiar. Ahí es donde la perseverancia se convierte en militancia personal: estudiar, aunque la vida insista en interrumpirte, es un acto de resistencia.
But it’s not all about technique. Some students reach the CBC while working eight-hour shifts, caring for family members, or traveling long distances. Life is heavy, and university often seems designed for those who can only study. That’s where perseverance becomes a personal stance: studying—even when life keeps interrupting you—is an act of resistance.
Porque sí, habrá días de cansancio, de dudas, de sentir que no vale la pena, esto es el CBC, un filtro para muchos que desgraciadamente terminan quedando atrás, pero quienes deciden estar en contra de esto deben primero pasarlo para quizá, con un pensamiento utópico, terminar la carrera y luchar para que el CBC no sea el ataúd para muchos estudiantes que resignaron por frustración.
Because yes, there will be days of exhaustion, doubt, and the feeling that it isn’t worth it. That’s the CBC: a filter that sadly leaves many behind. But those who decide to push against that must first get through it and, perhaps with a bit of utopian spirit, finish their degree and fight so that the CBC is not the coffin for students who gave up out of frustration.
La UBA, con todas sus falencias y sus masividades, sigue siendo una de las instituciones más democratizadoras de Argentina, porque acapara gran parte de su estudiantado a obreros, extranjeros, y no dar unos de la mercantilización a la educación, que tanta "defensa" hacen en campaña políticos, pero si fuese por ellos los hijos de obreros nunca estudiarían.
Despite its flaws and massive scale, UBA remains one of Argentina’s most democratizing institutions: it welcomes large numbers of working-class students and foreigners, and it resists the commodification of education—so often “defended” in campaigns by politicians who, if it were up to them, would ensure workers’ children never study.
La imagen de un obrero que llega de la fábrica se sienta a estudiar, y años después se recibe, no es utopía. Es historia viva en toda universidad gratuita y garantizada para el pueblo. Y eso, más allá de rankings y números, es su mayor prestigio: ser el espacio donde la educación y la igualdad se encuentran.
The image of a worker coming from the factory, sitting down to study, and years later graduating is not utopia. It’s living history in every free, people-guaranteed university. And beyond rankings and figures, that is its greatest prestige: being the space where education and equality meet.
Luego de estar tanto tiempo intentándolo, este año me comprometí conmigo mismo para terminar el CBC y arrancar la carrera, teniendo un trabajo adaptativo de lo que estoy estudiando: Psicología, se me hace más fácil afrontar el día a día para tener un eje que me marque hacia donde quiero ir y donde quiero llegar. Obvio que compartiré el día que me reciba aquí en Hive, espero con ansias el momento de contarlo con alegría.
After trying for so long, this year I made a commitment to myself to finish the CBC and start the degree. Having a job aligned with what I’m studying—Psychology—makes it easier to face the day-to-day, giving me a compass that points to where I want to go and where I want to arrive. Of course I’ll share the day I graduate here on Hive; I’m eagerly waiting to tell that story with joy.
