Hoy quiero traerles un poco de Story Time de lo que ha sido esta semana, una que me dejó agotada y con la cabeza llena de frustración. El detonante fue la imperiosa necesidad que tuve de hacer un pago en divisas. Por suerte, logré resolverlo, pero este simple trámite me recordó la gigantesca herida abierta que es el tema cambiario en nuestro país, algo que, sin duda, genera una polémica tremenda.
La discusión se centra, por supuesto, en el alto precio especulativo al que se están vendiendo los dólares en el mercado paralelo, un factor clave que empuja a la economía venezolana cada día más en picada. Y sí, es el punto en el que muchos se apresuran a señalar culpables, a decir que es culpa de fulano o de sutano. Sin embargo, en el fondo, y por la manera en que nos vemos obligados a manejarnos, todos terminamos teniendo, de algún modo, un poco de responsabilidad en este círculo vicioso. Es un sistema enfermo donde todos, por acción u omisión, jugamos un papel.
Actualmente, conseguir las divisas, al menos aquí en mi ciudad, se ha convertido en una verdadera hazaña, casi una misión imposible. Esto se debe a que muchos se dedican a esconder los dólares para luego comercializarlos en sus grupos privados de WhatsApp o Telegram a precios que superan con creces la tasa oficial. Son tarifas totalmente especulativas, impuestas por la viveza y la necesidad.
Today I want to share a little bit of Story Time with you about what this week has been like, a week that left me exhausted and with my head full of frustration. The trigger was the urgent need I had to make a payment in foreign currency. Luckily, I managed to resolve it, but this simple procedure reminded me of the huge open wound that is the exchange rate issue in our country, something that undoubtedly generates tremendous controversy.
The discussion focuses, of course, on the high speculative price at which dollars are being sold on the parallel market, a key factor that is pushing the Venezuelan economy further and further into decline every day. And yes, this is the point at which many are quick to point fingers, saying that it is the fault of so-and-so. However, deep down, and because of the way we are forced to operate, we all end up bearing some responsibility for this vicious circle. It is a sick system in which we all play a role, either by action or omission.
Currently, obtaining foreign currency, at least here in my city, has become a real feat, almost an impossible mission. This is because many people are hiding dollars to later sell them in their private WhatsApp or Telegram groups at prices that far exceed the official rate. These are totally speculative rates, imposed by cunning and necessity.
Y es en este punto donde la lógica se rompe. Lo ideal, lo que debería ser la norma, sería simplemente ir al Banco de Venezuela o a cualquier entidad bancaria donde uno tenga su cuenta y retirar la cantidad necesaria para cubrir su compromiso.
Pero, ¿qué ocurre cuando vas al banco y te encuentras con la respuesta de siempre: "No hay divisas disponibles"? Es ahí cuando miles de venezolanos, incluyéndome en esta ocasión, se ven forzados a caer en las manos de estas mafias. Estos grupos se encargan de comprar los pocos dólares que circulan a un precio bajo y luego los revenden al usuario que los necesita urgentemente, sangrando cada vez más la economía del país y asfixiando a la gente honesta que solo quiere pagar una deuda o cubrir un gasto básico.
Y aquí es donde entran en juego los tristemente célebres "bachaqueros del dólar". Ellos compran todas las divisas que pueden acaparar. Luego, cuando el usuario común y corriente acude a los canales regulares para intentar comprar, se encuentra con el temido "no hay". La consecuencia inmediata es que estos "bachaqueros" terminan vendiéndote el dólar a un precio casi que al doble de su valor real. Y la triste verdad es que uno, por pura y simple necesidad, no tiene más remedio que pagar ese sobreprecio.
And this is where logic breaks down. Ideally, what should be the norm would be to simply go to the Bank of Venezuela or any other bank where you have an account and withdraw the amount needed to cover your commitment.
But what happens when you go to the bank and get the usual response: “There is no foreign currency available”? That's when thousands of Venezuelans, including myself on this occasion, are forced to fall into the hands of these mafias. These groups buy the few dollars in circulation at a low price and then resell them to users who urgently need them, further bleeding the country's economy and suffocating honest people who just want to pay a debt or cover a basic expense.
And this is where the infamous “dollar bachaqueros” come into play. They buy up all the foreign currency they can get their hands on. Then, when ordinary users turn to regular channels to try to buy, they are met with the dreaded “no hay” (there is none). The immediate consequence is that these “bachaqueros” end up selling you the dollar at almost double its real value. And the sad truth is that, out of sheer necessity, you have no choice but to pay that surcharge.
Si en nuestro país existieran políticas cambiarias claras, coherentes y que se aplicaran de manera efectiva, nada de esto estaría ocurriendo. No tendríamos que gastar dos días de nuestra vida buscando desesperadamente dónde comprar dólares, porque simplemente se conseguiría la cantidad que se necesite a un precio justo y en los lugares designados.
Lo cierto es que esta situación me generó un estrés increíble. Estuve dos días completos en esa búsqueda infructuosa, sintiendo la presión de tener que cumplir con ese compromiso, mientras en el banco me daban la espalda. Estaba tan abrumada con el tema, tan cargada emocionalmente, que hice un video en TikTok donde simplemente drené este sentir. Mi intención era desahogarme, pero el resultado fue una avalancha de opiniones que picaron y se extendieron por toda la plataforma.
Me di cuenta de que el tema va más allá de solo echar culpas al gobierno o a las élites, como muchos sugieren. Una gran parte del problema reside en cómo el propio venezolano, por oportunismo, se encarga de comercializar con las divisas a precios extremos, volviéndose parte de la misma enfermedad que critica.
If our country had clear, consistent exchange rate policies that were effectively enforced, none of this would be happening. We wouldn't have to spend two days of our lives desperately searching for places to buy dollars, because we could simply get the amount we needed at a fair price and at designated locations.
The truth is that this situation caused me incredible stress. I spent two full days on this fruitless search, feeling the pressure of having to fulfill that commitment, while the bank turned its back on me. I was so overwhelmed by the issue, so emotionally charged, that I made a video on TikTok where I simply drained this feeling. My intention was to vent, but the result was an avalanche of opinions that stung and spread across the platform.
I realized that the issue goes beyond just blaming the government or the elites, as many suggest. A large part of the problem lies in how Venezuelans themselves, out of opportunism, engage in currency trading at extreme prices, becoming part of the very disease they criticize.
Algo que comenzó como solo una forma de expresar una emoción del momento se convirtió, para mi sorpresa, en el tema del día en mis notificaciones. Nunca, de verdad, nunca había respondido tantos mensajes y comentarios. De hecho, apenas estoy comenzando a crear contenido en esta red social, y vivir esta experiencia me demostró el poder de tocar una fibra tan sensible y tan real en la vida de todos nosotros. Es el sentir de un país atrapado en una especulación que no da tregua.
What started as just a way to express a momentary emotion became, to my surprise, the topic of the day in my notifications. I had never, ever responded to so many messages and comments. In fact, I'm just starting to create content on this social network, and this experience showed me the power of touching such a sensitive and real chord in all of our lives. It's the feeling of a country caught up in relentless speculation.
