El inicio del año escolar no solo trae consigo la emoción del reencuentro y los nuevos aprendizajes, sino también la cruda realidad de las necesidades en las instituciones públicas. Como representante, esta etapa marca el comienzo de una serie de proyectos por autogestión, todos orientados a mejorar la experiencia y la comodidad de nuestros niños durante su jornada educativa. Es un compromiso que asumimos porque, tristemente, en una escuela pública las carencias suelen superar las dotaciones.
Por fortuna, este año dimos un paso adelante y comenzamos a trabajar con antelación. Nuestra primera meta fue abordar la urgencia del calor. Nos enfocamos en resolver la instalación de dos ventiladores que habíamos adquirido el año anterior gracias al aporte de cada representante. El problema inicial fue que se trataba de ventiladores de pedestal, lo que obligaba a los niños a llevarlos y traerlos a diario de sus casas.
Con el tiempo, esta dinámica se convirtió en un inconveniente constante. Frecuentemente, el niño encargado de mover el ventilador ese día faltaba a clases o simplemente olvidaba su turno, dejando a todo el salón sin la ventilación necesaria. Fue entonces cuando tomé la decisión: esos ventiladores debían quedar fijos en el aula.
The start of the school year brings not only the excitement of reunions and new learning experiences, but also the harsh reality of the needs of public institutions. As a representative, this stage marks the beginning of a series of self-managed projects, all aimed at improving the experience and comfort of our children during their educational journey. It is a commitment we make because, sadly, in a public school, shortages often exceed resources.
Fortunately, this year we took a step forward and began working in advance. Our first goal was to address the urgency of the heat. We focused on installing two fans that we had purchased the previous year thanks to the contributions of each representative. The initial problem was that these were pedestal fans, which required the children to bring them to and from school every day.
Over time, this dynamic became a constant inconvenience. Often, the child in charge of moving the fan that day would miss class or simply forget their turn, leaving the entire classroom without the necessary ventilation. That's when I made the decision: those fans had to be permanently installed in the classroom.
Así, aproveché una base robusta de un ventilador que tenía en casa y, con la invaluable ayuda de un colaborador de la escuela, logramos instalarlos de forma segura en la pared. Si bien no es una solución definitiva que cubra todas las esquinas del salón, es una ayuda significativa que mitiga el calor sofocante del mediodía, creando un ambiente un poco más tolerable para la concentración y el aprendizaje.
La Misión: 40 Mesas Sillas Nuevas Sin embargo, había otra incomodidad que me preocupaba aún más: el mobiliario. Al inicio de cada jornada, el caos se apoderaba del salón. Los niños se sentaban en el primer puesto que veían, lo que magnificaba la realidad del deterioro. Muchas de las mesas y sillas estaban muy maltrechas, pero sabíamos que tenían arreglo y potencial. Fue así como planifiqué un ambicioso proyecto interno del salón: la recuperación de cuarenta (40) mesas sillas.
Para lograrlo, la colaboración fue clave. Requeríamos pintura en esmalte de color negro para las estructuras metálicas y gris para las tapas de las mesas. Estos colores estaban dentro de la normativa establecida por el Ministerio de Educación para el mobiliario escolar, según la información que manejamos. Con el aporte económico de los padres, pudimos comprar todo lo necesario y dedicamos un intenso fin de semana a esta noble actividad. La jornada contempló la recuperación completa de las 40 unidades: lijado, aplicación de pintura esmalte negra en la base metálica y gris en la superficie de las mesas.
So, I took advantage of a sturdy fan base I had at home and, with the invaluable help of a school collaborator, we managed to install them securely on the wall. While it is not a definitive solution that covers every corner of the classroom, it is a significant help in mitigating the stifling midday heat, creating a slightly more tolerable environment for concentration and learning.
The Mission: 40 New Tables and Chairs However, there was another discomfort that concerned me even more: the furniture. At the beginning of each day, chaos took over the classroom. The children sat in the first seat they saw, which magnified the reality of the deterioration. Many of the tables and chairs were badly damaged, but we knew they could be repaired and had potential. That's how I planned an ambitious internal classroom project: the restoration of forty (40) tables and chairs.
To achieve this, collaboration was key. We needed black enamel paint for the metal structures and gray paint for the table tops. These colors were within the regulations established by the Ministry of Education for school furniture, according to the information we had. With the financial contribution of the parents, we were able to buy everything we needed and dedicated an intense weekend to this noble activity. The day included the complete restoration of the 40 units: sanding, applying black enamel paint to the metal base and gray to the table surfaces.
Pero el proyecto fue más allá de la simple pintura. Teníamos un objetivo pedagógico y logístico: asignar y personalizar cada puesto. Dentro del plan, se contempló el diseño y la colocación de etiquetas plastificadas para personalizar y enumerar cada mesa y cada silla, estableciendo un puesto fijo para cada estudiante. Esta asignación se hizo de manera estratégica: los niños más bajitos y aquellos con alguna discapacidad visual fueron ubicados en los puestos delanteros para optimizar su visibilidad y participación.
El Reto de la Permanencia y la Satisfacción El proceso de diseñar las etiquetas, personalizarlas y enumerarlas fue meticuloso. Esto era crucial porque el aula es compartida con otra sección del liceo en el turno de la tarde, lo que convertía la permanencia de nuestros arreglos en un gran desafío. Temíamos que el esfuerzo de un fin de semana se perdiera en el primer cambio de turno.
Afortunadamente, la unión hace la fuerza. Los representantes nos sumamos con energía y, con nuestro aporte de trabajo y recursos, pudimos hacerlo realidad. Hoy por hoy, ver el salón transformado, con pupitres uniformes, funcionales y, lo más importante, personalizados, es una enorme satisfacción. Nuestros niños ya no pelean por un puesto ni se sientan en sillas rotas. Tienen sus puestos fijos, diseñados para su mayor comodidad y adaptados a sus necesidades. Este proyecto no solo recuperó mobiliario, sino que también fortaleció nuestro sentido de comunidad y demostró que la autogestión es una poderosa herramienta para dignificar el ambiente de estudio de nuestros hijos.
But the project went beyond simple painting. We had an educational and logistical goal: to assign and personalize each seat. The plan included the design and placement of laminated labels to personalize and number each table and chair, establishing a fixed seat for each student. This assignment was done strategically: shorter children and those with visual impairments were placed in the front seats to optimize their visibility and participation.
The Challenge of Permanence and Satisfaction The process of designing, personalizing, and numbering the labels was meticulous. This was crucial because the classroom is shared with another section of the school in the afternoon, which made the permanence of our arrangements a major challenge. We feared that a weekend's effort would be lost at the first shift change.
Fortunately, unity is strength. The representatives joined forces with energy and, with our contribution of work and resources, we were able to make it happen. Today, seeing the classroom transformed, with uniform, functional, and, most importantly, personalized desks, is a huge satisfaction. Our children no longer fight for a seat or sit on broken chairs. They have their own fixed seats, designed for their comfort and adapted to their needs. This project not only recovered furniture, but also strengthened our sense of community and demonstrated that self-management is a powerful tool for dignifying our children's learning environment.
