Este trabajo no busca glorificar ni condenar, sino recordar con certeza. Fidel Castro fue, para muchos, símbolo de esperanza; para otros, de contradicción. La siguiente crónica recoge una vivencia local que subyace en un añejo reducto de nuestro imaginario, que se niega a olvidar. Que esta publicación sirva como testimonio, reflexión y puente entre memorias.
Diversos, y a veces encontrados, son algunos de los testimonios que aún habitan en la memoria popular, local, referidos a las ocasiones en que hizo acto de presencia - en nuestro terruño (Baire) - Fidel Castro Ruz, el líder de la Revolución Cubana… Relacionadas con éstas, los baireros hemos celebrado - ininterrumpidamente; durante estos últimos 63 años - sólo dos importantes efemérides: la entrada al poblado del Ejército Rebelde: (9/12/58), comandada por él y el tránsito y estacionamiento, de la "Caravana de la Libertad": (2/1/59). Pero lo cierto es que estuvo en otros momentos históricos. En una de esas visitas, él se comprometió con los baireros, prometiéndole que volvería para el cercano 24 de febrero, ocasión en que se celebraría un aniversario más del inicio de la gesta independentista de 1895.
¡Y cumplió…!
Se impone aclarar, que Baire pertenecía, entonces, a la jurisdicción de Jiguaní, no a Contramaestre como alguien se ha atrevido a reseñar, en reciente artículo, pretendiendo adjudicarle, a esta última, el protagonismo de un suceso socio-histórico y cultural notorio que no le corresponde, porque lo cierto es que, no es de tan larga data la aprobación e implementación de la "División Político Administrativa" vigente actualmente, que nos ha impuesto un status - al parecer, perpetuo - de asentamiento semiurbano y dependiente.
Desde las primeras horas del (24/02/59), una multitud estuvo esperándolo, hasta bien tarde en la noche, pero no llegó ese día. No obstante, cumpliendo con la palabra empeñada, Fidel llegó de incógnito e inesperadamente en horas de la madrugada del 25 de febrero.
En una tarima ubicada en la intercepción de calle 7 y Avenida 6, pronunció un discurso de, aproximadamente, hora y media. Una multitud de baireros curiosos y enardecidos, aplaudieron y dieron vítores al líder.
Luego lo acogió, en su horgar, Teodoro Garcés Pérez (actual Avenida 6 ÷ 9 y 7), quien le había mostrado sentimientos de simpatía y admiración, que derivaron en una sincera amistad. Cuentan testigos oculares que le brindaron, en la casa amiga, un desayuno representativo de la comida criolla; plato predilecto del cubano: café con leche, huevo frito y tostones.

Lo acompañaban, entre otros, los cercanos Celia Sánchez (quien fungía como celosa guardiana del líder cubano)..., y Manuel Piñeiro ("Barbarroja").
Cuentan, además - y así lo testimonian las imágenes facilitadas mucho tiempo después por Teodoro Garcés, [aficionado a la fotografia] - que el líder manifestó su agradecimiento por la acogida de la familia amiga, y refirió ideas futuristas plagadas de esperanza para la patria, que despertaron interés en los presentes y fueron motivo para un corto pero ameno intercambio con los presentes, entre los que se destacó el periodista Cesar Marín, quien llamó la atención del ilustre e histórico personaje. Estuvieron presentes, entre otros más, Martha Garcés, Arquímedes Garcés y su esposa Emerita Pérez (Emedita).
Baire quedó intacto y Fidel no volvió más...!!

Related to these, we Baireros have celebrated - uninterruptedly; during these last 63 years - only two important anniversaries: the entry of the Rebel Army into the town (12/9/58), commanded by him, and the transit and parking of the "Freedom Caravan" (January 2, 59). But the truth is that he was there at other historical moments. On one of those visits, he made a commitment to the people of Baire, promising that he would return on the upcoming February 24th, the occasion of another anniversary of the beginning of the independence struggle of 1895.
And he kept his word…!

On a platform located at the intersection of 7th Street and 6th Avenue, he gave a speech lasting approximately an hour and a half. A crowd of curious and excited residents of Bairro Alto applauded and cheered the leader.
He was then welcomed into his home by Teodoro Garcés Pérez (now 6th Avenue between 9th and 7th Streets), who had shown him feelings of sympathy and admiration, which grew into a sincere friendship. Eyewitnesses say that he was treated to a breakfast representative of Creole cuisine at his friend's house; Cuban favorite dish: coffee with milk, fried egg, and tostones.
