Entre las acciones estratégicas acometidas con prontitud, figuraba el posicionamiento de una patrulla (llamada en esa época perseguidora) en las proximidades del caserío de «La Salada», (sector oeste).

Avanzada la madrugada, se avistó un vehículo con medias luces y movimiento sigiloso. Presumiblemente, se acercaba el objetivo esperado….. Resultó ser, un camión de marca indeterminada, que al pasar cerca de la patrulla recibió la orden de detenerse, reaccionando tardíamente a unos 50 metros de la posta revolucionaría.
Del mismo se lanzó, apresuradamente el chofer y se dirigió a los combatientes susurrándole:
– ¡Son infiltrados, me traen encañonado. Detrás, acostado en la cama, vienen más!!
Efectivamente, entre los que se ocultaban en la parte posterior, venía herido de gravedad el jefe del grupo mercenario. Sobre los que se alzaron, fueron lanzados más de 10 000 hombres , organizados, tácticamente, en inexorables cercos, bajo el mando del destacado oficial Raúl Menéndez Tomassevich (jefe entonces del Ejército Oriental)… Fuerzas integradas por combatientes de Baracoa, Holguín, Bayamo, Palma Soriano, así como combatientes y oficiales del Estado Mayor, del MININT, milicias de Baire, Jiguaní y del Curso de Jefes de Escuadra de Mayarí.

Éstas y muchas otras acciones heroicas, caracterizaron la llamada «OPERACIÓN BAIRE», que culminó el día 20 del mismo mes, con la captura del último infiltrado.
