El papel de las mujeres en las artes siempre ha sido un tema de conflicto. Entre prohibiciones, tabúes y reivindicaciones a lo largo de la historia. Teniendo este contexto como base no resulta sorpresivo el impacto que tuvieron muchas artistas cuando por fin tuvieron el espacio para visibilizar sus obras. Siendo el punto de quiebre más importante los inicios del siglo XX con la llegada de las vanguardias. En este contexto surge y desarrolla su obra la artista sobre la cual hoy haremos un repaso Maruja Mallo.
Podríamos encajar a esta artista entre las llamadas surrealistas, pero a mi entender su obra trasciende estos moldes, en general es difícil catalogar el arte hecho por mujeres en tiempos de vanguardia dentro de una de estas corrientes, ya que el proceso de creación y la propia sensibilidad nacen de lugares distintos. Si bien la mayoría de artistas masculinos de esta época crean partiendo desde algún manifiesto o exploración del subconsciente o la reinterpretation del arte tradicional de culturas originarias, con la mujeres pasaba algo distinto.
Este arte se proyectaba desde una condición de nueva libertad creativa y universal, sobre sus obres cargaban siglos de represión al discurso y la visión femenina, crear desde esta posición condiciona y sienta las bases para una obra tal vez con recursos estéticos similares a los de su tiempo, pero con un background conceptual bastante distinto.
Maruja Mallo irrumpe en la escena artística del Madrid de inicios del siglo XX estudiando en las más prestigiosas academias de arte, codeandose con los grandes nombres en el arte contemporáneo que por esa época habitaban el mismo espacio, como Daly, Andres Breton, Lorca, etc, muchos de los cuales travaron amistad con la artista. Creando así las relaciones que son necesarias en cualquier esfera de la vida humana.
Este entorno tan fértil y cargado de ideas revolucionarias pueden verse reflejada en su obra en la cual podemos identificar rasgos de muchas corrientes artísticas, como el propio surrealismo, aspectos cubistas y cierta herencia del barroco, con estas obras cargadas de personajes que interactuan entre ellos pero que a su vez trasforman su realidad.
Otro aspecto muy interesante en la obra de esta artista es el uso del color, con cuadros vibrantes que se sienten llenos de vida y una exuberancia partícular, claro hay sus excepciones, ya que esta va ser una artista qué vive casi un siglo además de tener una obra en constante evolución. Pero siempre a pesar de los cambios u ejes temáticos que tuviese a lo largo del tiempo puede notarse esta partícular afinidad por las simetrías, lo matemático con unas composiciones casi preciosistas.
Otro aspecto destacable es su vinculo con la representación de la naturaleza y esa vida vegeta, en parte esto está dado por su exilio (a causa de la guerra civil española) qué la llevo a conocer muchos lugares enfre ellos latinoamericana lo que claramente influyó en su forma de interpretar y representar varios temas. Así la "naturaleza viva" y esta forma muy partícular de interpretar el surrealismo desde el "alma latinoamericana" puede verse a lo largo de su obra.
Así esta artista se convierte en un reflejo ideal de su tiempo como el contexto, los conflictos, las relaciones, etc, influyen en la obra de una artista y la trasforman. El imaginario personal va mutando con nuestras experiencias por eso tener acceso a creaciones como la de Maruja Mallo qué vivió grandes etapas de cambio y efervescencia ideológica nos abre una pequeña puerta a estas realidades desde la propia creación de escenas imposibles qué nos hacen cuestionarnos cuanto de un mundo de vivencia y cuanto de simbolo hay en estas.
Beyond the Surreal (Introduction to the Work of Maruja Mallo) (Es-En)
The role of women in the arts has always been a subject of conflict, amidst prohibitions, taboos, and demands throughout history. With this context as a foundation, it's not surprising the impact many artists had when they finally had the space to make their work visible. The most important turning point was the early 20th century with the arrival of the avant-garde movements. It was in this context that the artist we will discuss today, Maruja Mallo, emerged and developed her work.
We could classify this artist among the so-called surrealists, but in my opinion, her work transcends these molds. In general, it is difficult to categorize the art created by women during avant-garde times within one of these movements, since the creative process and the sensibility itself arise from different places. While most male artists of this era created from a manifesto, an exploration of the subconscious, or a reinterpretation of traditional art from indigenous cultures, something different happened with women.
This art was projected from a position of new creative and universal freedom. Their works bore centuries of repression of female discourse and vision. Creating from this position conditions and lays the foundation for work that may have aesthetic resources similar to those of its time, but with a quite different conceptual background.
Maruja Mallo burst onto the Madrid art scene at the beginning of the 20th century, studying at the most prestigious art academies, rubbing shoulders with the great names in contemporary art who inhabited the same space at the time, such as Daly, Andres Breton, Lorca, etc., many of whom became friends with the artist. Thus, she created the relationships that are necessary in any sphere of human life.
This fertile environment, laden with revolutionary ideas, can be seen reflected in her work, where we can identify traits from many artistic movements, such as surrealism itself, Cubist aspects, and a certain legacy of the Baroque. These works are filled with characters who interact with each other but who, in turn, transform their reality.
Another very interesting aspect of this artist's work is her use of color, with vibrant paintings that feel full of life and a particular exuberance. Of course, there are exceptions, as this was an artist who lived for almost a century and whose work was constantly evolving. But despite the changes or thematic axes she had over time, this particular affinity for symmetries and mathematics, with almost precious compositions, can always be noted.
Another notable aspect is her connection with the representation of nature and vegetation. This is partly due to her exile (due to the Spanish Civil War), which led her to explore many places in Latin America, clearly influencing her way of interpreting and depicting various themes. Thus, "living nature" and this very particular way of interpreting surrealism from the "Latin American soul" can be seen throughout her work.
This artist thus becomes an ideal reflection of her time, as context, conflicts, relationships, etc., influence and transform an artist's work. Our personal imagination mutates with our experiences, so having access to creations like those of Maruja Mallo, who experienced great periods of change and ideological ferment, opens a small door to these realities through the creation of impossible scenes that make us question how much of them is a lived experience and how much is symbolic.
