My aunt is one woman I looked up to. Not because she dresses well, nor because she speaks well, rather she's my role model because of her character, lifestyle and mindset. I lived with her for just two year and those two years changed my mentality towards life.
My aunt was a graduate of biology, a very brilliant woman with big dreams. But life had it's own plans. After marriage, her husband made a very firm decision asking her not work. He wanted her to focus on raising their children and nothing else. Many would have taken it as an opportunity because at that time, the husband was financially buoyant. But she didn't want that.
She lovingly and peacefully agreed not to work outside the home. what impressed me wasn't just her obedience, but the way she found her own way to shine despite the restriction.
She was never idle. She was creative, she always find ways to earn incomes no matter how small it is. Back then, she reared and sold snails at home, she produces liquid soaps, bar soaps and vim at home. She produces all that and supplies them to restaurants, hotels and retail shops. With all these, she also find time to take good care of her family. She's someone who always put her best in every thing she does, making sure she succeeds.
One character I admired in her, was her consistency . She was dedicated to her works though they weren't yielding so much.
Living with her, I silently made a vow never to allow myself to be idle no matter the situation.
Right now, am extremely happy I followed that footstep. My husband may not have stopped me from working but that strategy still worked for me. I took a leaf from her book and that leaf has turned to a seed that will eventually bear fruits in my home.
Today, I make sure I have something doing, no matter how small the profits are. I work to support my family, I work because having my personal savings makes me happy. I work online and offline. I have a small store that allows me take good care of my children.
Right now, I can beat my chest and say that am genuinely happy. I have my own savings, my personal money. I don't have to ask for money for every little thing. I can assist my husband and most especially, am happy doing it.
I may not have studied biology, I may not be a graduate but Ive learnt that as long as there's breath in my nostrils I can create something valuable.
And am very grateful for that.
