I close my eyes and I'm right there: on the bus heading to San Juan de los Morros, with that afternoon sun beating down hard on the window, or on that longer trip to Caracas. Those were introspective journeys, you know? Where the landscape turns into a movie and your thoughts become the soundtrack. It was right around one of those times that I discovered Eels.
It was because of a book I found in TecniCiencias—remember that store? It was a place that specialized in books, full of tall shelves and that smell of new paper that I loved. I would spend hours digging through the new arrivals. There, almost by chance, I came across the life story of Mark Oliver Everett, "Things the Grandchildren Should Know." And man, did it captivate me. The way he writes so rawly yet hopefully about his battles, his losses, and his way of finding beauty in what's broken... it hit me right in the soul. Ever since then, as an artist, his work has been a guiding light for me. There are days when I just go and listen to his entire albums, letting that mix of sadness and tenderness wash over me.
So, well, after having these songs spinning in my head for so long, I finally dared to sing this one. It's "Little Bird." It's undoubtedly a bit sad, one of those that hits you softly, but it's always stuck in your brain because the melody is so catchy. I tried to give it a real nostalgic vibe, like a worn-out cassette tape. Although, to be honest with you, I didn't quite get the exact sound I had in mind—my setup is pretty basic, you understand—I think I managed to add some really interesting noise, like a whisper from the past that fits the lyrics quite well. It was a happy accident, as they say.

Esta canción, siempre, sin falla, me transporta. Cierro los ojos y ya estoy ahí: yendo en el autobús rumbo a San Juan de los Morros, con ese sol de la tarde pegando fuerte en la ventana, o en ese viaje más largo hacia Caracas. Eran esos viajes introspectivos, ¿sabes? Donde el paisaje se convierte en una película y tus pensamientos en la banda sonora. Justo en una de esas épocas fue que conocí a Eels.
Fue por un libro que encontré en Tecniciencias, ¿se acuerdan de esa tienda? Era un lugar especialista en libros, lleno de estantes altos y ese olor a papel nuevo que me encantaba. Pasaba horas hurgando entre las novedades. Allí, casi por casualidad, me topé con el libro de la vida de Mark Oliver Everett, "Things the Grandchildren Should Know". Y vaya que me cautivó. La forma tan cruda y a la vez esperanzadora en la que escribe sobre sus batallas, sus pérdidas y su manera de encontrar belleza en lo roto... me llegó directo al alma. Desde entonces, como artista, su trabajo es un faro para mí. Hay días en los que simplemente voy y escucho sus discos completos, dejando que esa mezcla de tristeza y ternura me envuelva.
Así que, ps, después de tanto tiempo con esas canciones dando vueltas en la cabeza, me atreví a cantar esta. Es "Little Bird", sin duda es algo triste, de esas que te golpean suavecito, pero siempre queda atrapada en el cerebro con lo pegajosa que es la melodía. Traté de darle una vibra bien nostállica, como de cinta de casete desgastada. Aunque, para serles honesto, no conseguí el sonido exacto que tenía en mente – mi equipo es bastante básico, ya me entienden –, creo que logré agregar un noise bien interesante, como un susurro del pasado que le queda bastante a la letra. Fue un happy accident, como dicen.
