A little while ago I spoke about negativity at work. Well... yesterday it happens that the same person that I had this issue with came to the conclusion that he wishes to retire.
To be honest. This work is not easy, comfortable or convenient. It is noisy, hot, humid and people work all over your area. The staff member that I speak of is over 60.
To be honest, his work has been sub-par for a while. It is normal for there to be obstacles and issues on site. When all of that gets to you constantly, you can become unhappy and this translates into not putting in your all into your work.
Its been that way for years with this man, and its manifested more and more heavily.
So it did not come as a major surprise that the man in question practically resigned. Who knows? Perhaps he will stick around for a while still, but his days are numbered and to be honest, I do not have time for him on site.
He drags everyone else down and to me it felt like he was setting himself up for failure.
Yesterday when I came up with a very physical involvement and solved the issue that he had been battling with for 3 days. Me, the "paperwork guy", the "safety officer", the "supervisor". And to be honest, this probably shocked him because part of his negativity means that he was bad-mouthing me and other guys following suit and that the conception is that I am useless at doing their job.
But in reality, I can do their job, but I am fulfilling a different role in the team. It does not make me better or more significant, but I have my part to play. I may not be as fast as the others in things THEY do every day... but what they do is not beyond my abilities.
So... after announcing that his head is not in a right space and that he is considering resigning/retiring, I said it would be better for him to be offsite because his mind cannot be unfocused in this environment (Safety and Quality reasons).
I then arranged for a replacement to come to site but this would be half a day to wait. So I took the assistant he had been working with, went on board, checked his work over, repaired issues found and then continued with the installation.
So I got some paperwork done and got stuck in at around 8:00-11:00 and then we had an early luch to catch an off-peak hour during other people's lunch. Started working at 12:00. At around 13:00ish, we were joined by the replacement staff member and then we continued to work together till 18:00.
So 4 hours team of 2 and then 5 hours as a team of 3... the result was that we got more work done than had been completed in the previous 3 days pur together!
I quite enjoyed doing the work and told the guys that they must be careful - maybe I stick one of them behind my PC and I will do the work myself from now on.
But I chose the supervisory path. I am chasing the dream of a better income.
So I will stick with it, but keep my physical skills and knowledge sharp!
Right... I need to go to site!
Cheers! @zakludick
